Crusaders Outlast Phoenix in Men's Volleyball

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - The Wilson College men's volleyball team opened the home portion of their schedule with a non-conference match-up with Alvernia University.

The Crusaders (3-1) won by scores of 25-22, 25-16, 20-25, 19-25, and 15-13 over the Phoenix (1-8). After dropping the first two sets, the Phoenix came alive and finished the match with three solid sets. The Phoenix took the third set on the strength of 9 kills, 4 by sophomore
Aaron Hoke (Chambersburg, Pa., Commonwealth Connections Academy) and 3 by sophomore Zachary Zerr (Dallastown, Pa, Dallastown Area H.S.) During the fourth set win, it was freshman Nick Baxter (Denver, Pa., Cocalico) who tallied 4 kills. The fifth and final set was exciting as the Phoenix jumped out to a solid 9-4 advantage, but the Crusaders rallied to tie the match at 12-12. The Crusaders would finish off the set scoring 3 of the last 4 points en route to the 15-13 win and closed out the match 3-2.

For the match, the Crusaders had 42 kills against 25 errors on 117 attempts for a .145 attacking percentage, while the Phoenix had 39 kills against 21 errors for a .148 attacking percentage.

Aaron Hoke and Baxter led the team with 11 kills each, while Zerr added 7 kills. Freshman
Ian Firestone (York, Pa., York Suburban) had a match high 34 assists while sophomore Evan Hoke (Chambersburg, Pa., Commonwealth Connections Academy) led the way with 9 digs. Zerr also had a match high 5 blocks while Aaron Hoke added a match high 4 service aces.

Wilson will return to action on Wednesday, February 15 at home versus Wilkes University at 7:00 p.m.
