Phoenix Torch Colonels

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - The Wilson College men's volleyball team hosted Wilkes University in a non-conference match-up this evening. The Phoenix claimed their second win of the season with a 3-1 victory over the Colonels.

The Phoenix (2-8) won by scores of 25-23, 24-26, 25-20, and 25-19 over the Colonels (5-5) in front of a loud crowd at the Gannett Memorial Field House. The Phoenix trailed 10-4 early in the opening set, but battled back to tie the game at 14-14. Kills by sophomore
Aaron Hoke (Chambersburg, Pa., Commonwealth Connections Academy) and freshman Nick Baxter (Denver, Pa., Cocalico) put the Phoenix ahead and they would close out the first set 25-23. After getting out to a quick lead in the second set, it was the Colonels turn to rally and take advantage of 5 Phoenix errors to claim the second set by a score of 26-24.

During set three and four the Phoenix gained the early momentum and made some fantastic plays to put pressure on the Colonels. The Phoenix combined for 22 kills in the final set and forced the Colonels into 10 errors en route to a 25-20 win in the third set and a 25-19 win in the fourth and final set as the team took the 3-1 victory.

For the match the Phoenix had 37 kills against 18 errors on 117 attempts for a .162 attacking percentage.

Aaron Hoke led the Phoenix attack along with Baxter as each tallied 13 kills. Sophomore
Zachary Zerr  (Dallastown, Pa, Dallastown Area H.S.) had a game high 5 blocks, while freshman Ian Firestone (York, Pa., York Suburban) had a game high 31 assists. Sophomore Evan Hoke (Chambersburg, Pa., Commonwealth Connections Academy) totaled 17 digs while also adding 5 kills.

Wilson will return to action this Friday as the team travels to Lancaster for a NEAC crossover versus Medaille College at 4:00 p.m. followed by a match with D'Youville College at 6:00 p.m.
