Volleyball Drops A Pair of NEAC Matches

UTICA, N.Y. - The Wilson College men's volleyball team wrapped up a North Eastern Athletic Conference weekend trip with a pair of matches against Wells College and SUNY Poly. The Phoenix dropped both matches by scores of 3-0.

In the opening match against Wells (2-6, 1-1 NEAC) the Phoenix (1-7, 0-3 NEAC) were defeated by score of 25-14, 25-18, and 25-15. In the opening set the Phoenix used a run where they scored 4 out of 5 points to take a 7-5 advantage highlighted by a pair of kills by sophomore
Zachary McMaster (Gettysburg, Pa., New Oxford). After a kill by sophomore Michael Martin (Martinsburg, W.Va., Musselman ) tied the set at 10-10, the Express would score 5 of 6 to take a 15-11 lead. The Phoenix would get a point to stop the run but the Express would rattle off 7 straight points to take a 22-12 lead and go on to win the set 25-14.

During the second set, kills by sophomore
Aaron Hoke (Chambersburg, Pa., Commonwealth Connections Academy), McMaster and sophomore Zachary Zerr (Dallastown, Pa, Dallastown Area H.S.) tied the game at 4-4. The Express would score 5 straight points for the 10-4 advantage. The Phoenix would battle back during the set and use an ace by freshman Nick Baxter (Denver, Pa., Cocalico) to pull within 2 points at 20-18, but the Express would finish out the set with a 25-18 win.

In the third set, the Phoenix jumped out to an early 3-2 lead but the Express quickly gained control grabbing a 10-7 advantage. The teams would battle back and forth with the Express eventually finishing off the set with a 25-15 win and the match 3-0.

For the match, the Phoenix had 30 kills against 12 errors for an attacking percentage of .243. Aaron Hoke led the way with 12 kills, while freshman
Ian Firestone (York, Pa., York Suburban) tallied 27 assists. Sophomore Evan Hoke (Chambersburg, Pa., Commonwealth Connections Academy) added 10 digs for the Phoenix.

In match number two versus the host SUNY Poly Wildcats (6-3, 3-0 NEAC) the Phoenix fell by scores of 25-15, 25-20, and 25-21. The opening set saw the Phoenix take a 7-6 lead on back to back kills by McMaster and Aaron Hoke. Later in the set, a 6-1 run by the Wildcats put them ahead 19-13 and the hosts would go on to win the set 25-15. During the second set, the Wildcats stormed out of the gate to take a 10-5 lead. Later in the set the Phoenix would battle back with a 6-1 run of their own highlighted by a pair of service aces by Aaron Hoke to pull within 19-17. But, the Phoenix would get no closer as the Wildcats closed out the set 25-20.

During the third and final set, the Phoenix took the early 5-1 edge with a kills by Aaron Hoke, McMaster and Zerr. After the hosts tied the game at 5-5, the two teams matched up within 3 points of each other for most of the set until the Wildcats pulled ahead 20-16 late. The Phoenix could not get any closer and the Wildcats closed out the set 25-21 and the match 3-0.

For the match, the Phoenix had 25 kills against 15 errors on 65 attempts for an attacking percentage of .154. Aaron Hoke had 8 kills and 2 services aces as well as 2 blocks. McMaster added 8 kills and Firestone tallied 24 assists.

Wilson will return to action on Tuesday with their home opener versus Alvernia University at 7:00 p.m.
