Phoenix Bounced By Nittany Lions

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - The Wilson College men's volleyball team hosted Penn State Behrend this afternoon in a non-conference match. The visiting Nittany Lions defeated the Phoenix by a score of 3-1.

The Nittany Lions (4-7) won by scores of 25-27, 25-19, 25-20, and 25-21 over the Phoenix (4-13). Trailing by 7 points at 19-12 in the first set, the Phoenix would use a kill by sophomore Zachary McMaster (Gettysburg, Pa., New Oxford) to start a 6-0 run and get within 1 point at 19-18. The Nittany Lions answered with 3 points in a row to take a 22-18 lead. A kill by freshman Nick Baxter (Denver, Pa., Cocalico), a defensive miscue by the Nittany Lions and a kill by sophomore Aaron Hoke (Chambersburg, Pa., Commonwealth Connections Academy) pulled the Phoenix to within 1 point at 22-21. After tying the set at 25-25, a pair of service aces by sophomore Zachary Zerr (Dallastown, Pa, Dallastown Area H.S.) finished off the set for the Phoenix at 27-25.

During the final 3 sets the Phoenix offense couldn't gain any traction as the Nittany Lions controlled each set and closed out the match by taking the final 3 sets by at least 4 points.

For the match, the Phoenix had 50 kills against 24 errors on 135 attempts for a .193 attacking percentage, while the Nittany Lions had 48 kills against 18 errors on 124 attempts for a .242 attacking percentage. Baxter led the Phoenix with a game high 21 kills, Aaron Hoke added 14 kills and McMaster had 9 kills. Zerr had a team high 5 blocks and a match high 3 service aces. Freshman Ian Firestone (York, Pa., York Suburban) had a match high 42 assists and freshman Chance Wheeler (Giles County, Va., Giles ) added 13 digs.

Wilson will be back on the court on Saturday, March 4 as they host a tri-match with Lancaster Bible College and Penn State Altoona beginning at 12:00 p.m.
