Men's Volleyball Falls to Knights in Double Header

CHAMBERSBURG, PA - This evening the Wilson College men's volleyball team hosted Southern Virginia University in a non-conference double header match. The Knights defeated the Phoenix 3-1 in the first match and 3-2 in the second match.

The Knights (14-4) defeated the Phoenix (4-12) 3-1 in the first match. The match went into four sets with scores of 25-17, 18-25, 25-11, 25-17. The Knights steadily maintained the lead throughout the first set. In the second set the Knights started off with a service error and the Phoenix scored and five straight points giving them a 6-1 lead over the visitors. The Phoenix continued to dominate offensively in the set. Freshman Nick Baxter (Denver, Pa.), who had 14 total kills for the match, spiked some scorchers onto the other side of the net leading the Phoenix to victory 25-18 for the second set. In the third set the Knights took back offensive dominance to seal the score a quick 25-11. The final set saw hope for the Phoenix to pull through. They maintained a score close to the Knights for much of the set, but towards the end of the the Knights pulled away with a number of back-to-back kills. The fourth set finished 25-17 Knights and the match was 3-1 Knights.

In the first match Baxter led the Phoenix offense with 14 kills followed by sophomore Aaron Hoke (Chambersburg, Pa.) with four service aces, seven digs, and eight kills. Freshman Ian Firestone (York, Pa.) contributed 26 assists. Sophomore Evan Hoke (Chambersburg, Pa.) was crucial to the Phoenix defense and tallied 12 digs for the match.

For the match the Phoenix had 29 kills against 21 errors on 95 attempts for a .084 attacking percentage. The Knights had 44 kills against 16 errors on 94 attempts for a .298 attacking percentage.

In the second game the Knights won by scores of 25-21, 25-15, 24-26, 23-25, 15-9. The first set was tightly contested but the Knights came out on top. In the second set the Knights established strong dominance to win by a score of 25-15. But in the third set the Phoenix rallied to tie the score 23-23 and took the victory 26-24. In the fourth game the Phoenix were behind for the first part of the set before they caught up to the Knights and tied the score 16-16. The Knights then pulled ahead after a few successful attacks, but the Phoenix rallied to tie the score again 21-21 and, after a time-out from the opposition, the home team took the fourth set 25-23. In the fifth set the Knights pulled ahead quickly and it ended in their favor 15-9. The Knights took the match 3-2.

The Phoenix had 32 kills against 26 errors on 115 total attempts for a .052 hitting percentage. The Knights had 63 kills against 32 errors on 143 attempts for a .217 hitting percentage.

In the second match Baxter had 11 kills followed by Aaron Hoke with nine. Firestone had 25 assist and 11 digs. Evan Hoke also tallied nine digs.

The Phoenix now have an overall season record of 4-12 and the Knights have an overall record of 14-4.

The Phoenix return to action at home Sunday, February 26, at 1:00 p.m. against Penn State Behrend.
