Men's Volleyball Slowed by Crusaders

READING, Pa. - The Wilson College men's volleyball team hit the road for a non-conference match-up at Alvernia University this evening. The host Crusaders topped the Phoenix by a score of 3-1.

The Phoenix (4-10) fell by scores of 25-21, 23-25, 25-23, and 25-22 to the Crusaders (7-4). In a rematch of a contest that went the full 5 sets two weeks ago, both teams again played a tight match. In the opening set, a kill by sophomore
Aaron Hoke (Chambersburg, Pa., Commonwealth Connections Academy) put the Phoenix up 5-4. Later in the set the Phoenix opened up a 2 point lead at 13-11 when freshman Nick Baxter (Denver, Pa., Cocalico) had a kill with an assist from freshman Ian Firestone (York, Pa., York Suburban). Trailing by 2 points, the Crusaders would rattle off 4 straight to take an 18-16 lead. Though the Phoenix battled, the Crusaders would close out the set 25-21.

Trailing 7-3 early in the second set, the Phoenix got kills form Baxter and sophomore
Zachary McMaster (Gettysburg, Pa., New Oxford) as part of three straight points to pull within 7-6. Later in the set, facing a 21-18 deficit, the Phoenix got hot and closed out the match by scoring seven of the next 9 points highlighted by kills from Baxter and sophomore Zachary Zerr (Dallastown, Pa, Dallastown Area H.S.) to claim the second set 25-23.

A kill by Zerr in the third set, put the Phoenix ahead 12-10, however the Crusaders rallied for three points in a row to take a 1-12 lead. Later in the set, trailing 21-20, another kill from Aaron Hoke knotted the score at 21-21. The Crusaders would score three straight points and looked to close out the set up 24-21, but a kill by McMaster and an ace by Zerr extended the match until the Crusaders took the final point and the set 25-23.

During the fourth set, the Phoenix took advantage of several Crusaders mistakes to take an 8-6 lead, but the hosts would score 4 in a row to reclaim the lead. After trailing by 3 points for much of the set, the Phoenix tried to rally to force a fifth set as a pair of kills by Aaron Hoke and a great defensive block by Zerr and Baxter brought the visitors within two points at 21-19. The Phoenix would not get any closer as the Crusaders closed out the set 25-22 and the match 3-1.

For the match the Phoenix had 48 kills against 27 errors on a 130 attempts for a .162 attacking percentage. Aaron Hoke led the way with 16 kills while Baxter added 15 kills and 5 blocks. Firestone tallied 45 digs while sophomore
Evan Hoke (Chambersburg, Pa., Commonwealth Connections Academy) had a game high 12 digs.

Wilson will be back in action at home on Friday, February 24 against Southern Virginia at 5:00 p.m.
