Express Derail Phoenix

CHAMBERSBURG, PA - Today the Wilson College women's basketball team hosted NEAC opponent Wells College. The Express (9-11, 8-7 NEAC) defeated the Phoenix by a score of 42-63.

The Express was first on the scoreboard with a jumper from Ryan Carly. Freshman Kristen Burdo (Norristown, Pa.) responded with a jumper in the paint assisted by sophomore Ashley Henderson (Upper Marlboro, Md.). Kamarie Maturine landed two baskets in the net for the Express. A defensive rebound from Henderson gave the Phoenix offense momentum and sophomore Lindsey Purvis (Fort Myers, Fl) sent a jump shot to the net. Purvis scored again, a lay-up this time, and got a defensive rebound that set up sophomore Jordyn Day (Richmond, Va) for a jumper that was good. A turnover for the Express gave Day an opportunity to sink a three-pointer into the net with Henderson on the assist. Ashida Cooper scored two more buckets for the Express to close the first quarter out a tight 13-11 in favor of the visitors. The Express offense dominated in the second quarter. Day managed to land a three-point shot with sophomore Amber Watkins--who led the team in rebounds today with 9--on the assist. The score was 35-15 at the half.

To start the third quarter Burdo landed a jump shot. The Phoenix scored 14 to the Express' 13, and even though Day wrapped up the quarter with 2 three-pointers the Express remained in the lead 48-29. Purvis, Henderson, Watkins, and Burdo put points up in the fourth, each with a jumper. Still the game ended in favor of the Express 63-42.

In the loss Jordyn Day led the Phoenix offense with 14 points followed by Burdo with 10. For the Express Ashida Cooper put up 24 points and Kamarie Maturine had double-double with 19 points and 11 rebounds.
