Lions Claw Women's Basketball

BRYN ATHYN, PA - This evening the Wilson College women's basketball team tipped off versus the Bryn Athyn Lions in an NEAC basketball contest. The Lions took the win 61-42.

The Lions (15-3, 12-2 NEAC) began the game with a three-pointer from Samantha Hicks. It was Phoenix (3-16, 1-4 NEAC) sophomore Jordyn Day (Richmond, Va) who broke the Lion's 9-0 run with a jumper. After the Lions' Allison Warren missed a three-point shot, a defensive rebound from senior Teniera Prioleau (Baltimore, Md.) gave the Phoenix offensive momentum to produce a lay-up coming from the hands of sophomore Lindsey Purvis (Fort Myers, Fl). Right after sophomore Ashley Henderson (Upper Marlboro, Md.) had the assist on Purvis' bucket, she slowed the Lions offense with a steal. At the end of the first quarter the Lions held a mere 5 point lead over the Phoenix. In the second quarter Purvis had two lay-ups and Day a three-pointer, but the Lions outscored the Phoenix 13-7.

As the game progressed, the Phoenix offense became more productive, scoring more points each quarter. In the third, freshman Kristen Burdo (Norristown, Pa.) and Purvis worked well together as Purvis' lay-up was assisted by Burdo and Burdo's jumper was assisted by Purvis. Sophomore Amber Watkins wrapped the period up with a lay-up just before the buzzer. The final quarter began 42-28 Lions. The Phoenix continued to increase their offensive productivity, but the Lions scored consistently and pushed defensively, tallying 10 blocks the the Phoenix's 3, in order to maintain their lead. The game ended in favor of the hosting Lions 61-42.

The Phoenix offense was led by Purvis with 14 points, Day with 10, and Burdo who had 6 points and 8 boards. The Lions' Kristina Clark had a double-double consisting of 15 points and 13 boards. The Phoenix scored 10 points off turnovers and the Lions, 9.

The Phoenix return to action on their home court for a Pink Out Game this Saturday, February 4, at 1:00 p.m. versus Penn State Berks. Wear Pink!
