Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Phoenix Soar Above Nittany Lions

CHAMBERSBURG, PA - The Wilson College women's basketball team hosted Penn State Berks in an NEAC basketball contest this afternoon. Coming off of three straight losses on the road, the Phoenix triumphed on their home court over the visiting Nittany Lions 82-71.

Freshman Kristen Burdo (Norristown, Pa.) put the first four points on the scoreboard for the Phoenix (4-16, 2-14 NEAC). Then sophomore Jordyn Day (Richmond, Va) and sophomore Ashley Henderson (Upper Marlboro, Md.) each contributed three-pointers in a 12-point scoring streak for the Phoenix. The Nittany Lions' (5-11, 5-9) Deanna Daddonna scored a lay-up, but a steal from sophomore Amber Jones (Waldorf, Md.) off Sam Huggins gave Jones the chance to put a lay-up of her own in the net. Going into the second quarter up 24-20 the Phoenix were scoreless for more than two minutes before a three-pointer from sophomore Henderson broke the ice and put the Phoenix back in the lead 27-26. Sophomore Amber Watkins (Honesdale, Pa) was the last to score in live play for the Phoenix in the first half, giving them the lead 42-37.

Burdo tallied points early in the second half with a jump shot that was answered with another from Nittany Lions' Sam Brensinger. Watkins respond quickly with another jump shot to increase the Phoenix lead. A three-pointer from Day gave the Phoenix a 13 point lead of 65-52 at the end on the third quarter. The Phoenix held their lead in the double digits for the remainder of the contest. The last field goal of the game, a three-pointer from Daddonna, was too little too late, and the Phoenix remained ahead 82-71 at the sound of the final buzzer.

Jordyn Day led the Phoenix offense with 28 points followed by Henderson with 20, Burdo with 14, and Purvis with 10.

Deanna Daddonna posted 34 points for the Nittany Lions in the loss followed by Sam Brensinger with 16.

With the win the Phoenix move up to 4-16 overall, 2-14 in the NEAC. The Nittany Lions move to 5-11 overall and 5-9 in the NEAC.

The Phoenix return to action on their home court tomorrow, Sunday, February 5, at 12:00 p.m. versus Lancaster Bible College who currently leads the NEAC South division.
