Women's Hoops Falls to Patriots

CHAMBERSBURG, PA. - The Wilson College women's basketball team played host to the University of Valley Forge in non-conference action tonight. Tha Patriots (3-5) defeated the Phoenix (4-5) by a final score of 62-49.

How It Happened: It was a tough shooting night for the Phoenix and that started early in the first quarter as the Phoenix missed their first seven shots from the field. After falling behind 7-2 the Phoenix got a three-point basket from junior Ashley Henderson (Upper Marlboro, Md., North Point) to cut the deficit to 7-5, however the Patriots closed out the quarter on a 6-0 run to take a 13-5 edge. Midway through the second quarter, the Patriots lead had grown to twelve points, but the Phoenix ended the half on an 8-2 run that was finished off by a three-pointer from freshman Michaela Singer (Annville, Pa., Annville-Cleona) to make the score 26-20 at the break. The third quarter was the best scoring quarter for the Phoenix as they were able to cut the deficit to one point as junior Lindsey Purvis (Fort Myers, Fl, South Fort Myers) hit a bucket followed by another three-pointer from Singer and three free throws from junior Jordyn Day (Richmond, Va, Varina) to make the score 37-36 Patriots with two minutes to go in the quarter. A 7-2 run by the Patriots closed out the quarter with the visitors leading 44-38. In the final quarter the Phoenix pulled within four points early on a three-pointer by Day, but a 9-0 run by the Patriots would prove to be too much to overcome as they would go on for the 62-49 win.

Inside the Box Score: Day led the Phoenix with 17 points while junior Jasmine Wallace (Detroit, MI, Bladensburg (Md.)) had a team high 14 rebounds. The Patriots Jhanel Brown had game highs with 32 points and 19 rebounds. The Phoenix out rebounded the Patriots 50-48, however the Patriots held decisive 48-14 edge in points in the paint.
