Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Phoenix Raided by Shippensburg

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. - Tonight the Wilson College Phoenix traveled to Shippensburg to take on division II opponent, the Shippensburg University Raiders (8-2, 4-1). The Phoenix (6-5, 1-2 NEAC) lost the game by a final score of 66-92.

How It Happened: The Phoenix put in work offensively, but the Raiders had stronger defensive and offensive game. Sophomore Rashaan Bean (San Antonio, Tx) landed a three-pointer to start, assisted by junior Ian Frazier (Palmyra, Pa.). But the Raiders didn't waste any time to land a three-pointer of their own from Antonio Kellem. The Raiders' Conner Clay then went in for a lay-up but he was denied by senior Willie McDowell (Baltimore, MD). Still, the Raiders managed to get the rebound, and this time Dustin Sleva went for a lay-up and didn't miss. McDowell then stole the ball, but the Phoenix missed their first shot. Fortunately, junior Keion Adams (Gaithersburg, Md.) was able to reach for the rebound and land a lay-up. With the score 8-9 Raiders, the first part of the half was close--a reflection of the Phoenix's aggressive play. Feeling the pressure from the Phoenix, the Raiders called a time out and came back on the court with a three-pointer. But the Phoenix refused to back down easy. It wasn't until almost the last five minutes of the first half that the Raiders started to pull away and take a steep lead. Sleva was a force to be reckoned with as he shot 100% of his free throws and scored 25 points in the first half alone in order to secure the home team's advantage.

The second half started out 30-50 Raiders. The Raider's defense was not as aggressive in the second half and the Phoenix's field goal percentage increased from 34.4 in the first to 42.9 in the second. Still, the Raiders offense remained productive. Despite a lot of back and forth scoring in the first five minutes of the second half, the Phoenix just couldn't make a dent in the deficit they had accrued in the first. Freshman Zachary Powell (Manassas, Va.) was the last to score for the Phoenix as he shot a three-point bucket at the 3:36 mark to make the score 66-86. The Raiders finished the game out with a six point run and they took the win 92-66.

Inside the Box Score: The Raiders had a better overall field goal percentage making 55.2% to the Phoenix's 38.3%. However, the Phoenix had higher accuracy behind the arc making 45.8% of their three-pointers compared to the Raiders' 32%. Four Phoenix achieved double digits this game. Adams and Powell had 16 points each. McDowell had 14 points, and Bean had 13. The Raiders' Dustin Sleva was the game's leading scorer as he put up 31 points on the scoreboard and made 10 rebounds.

Up Next: The Phoenix return to action Thursday, January 4, at Penn State York.
