Phoenix Frighten Green Terror

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - This afternoon the Wilson College Phoenix took on the McDaniel College Green Terror (2-7, 0-4) in non-conference action. The Phoenix (6-4, 1-2 NEAC) defeated the Green Terror 71-66.

How It Happened: Defense was a key factor on both sides of the court tonight. The Phoenix came on strong at the start of the game with 5-0 run consisting of a three-pointer from junior Keion Adams (Gaithersburg, Md.) and a jumper from sophomore Rashaan Bean (San Antonio, Tx). The Green Terror nailed 2 three-point field goals to narrow the score 6-7 in favor of the hosts. But then a lay-up from junior Ian Frazier (Palmyra, Pa.) assisted by senior Willie McDowell (Baltimore, MD) put the Phoenix further ahead. Frazier then made a basket from behind the arc assisted by McDowell again, who went on to steal the ball and take it to the paint for a layup. A three-pointer from senior Martez Beckett (Randallstown, Md.) then completed a 10 point run for the Phoenix. Josh McWilliams ended the home team's run with a crucial three-pointer for the Green Terror. It looked like the visitors were closing in on the Phoenix as they trailed by only 4 with a score of 17-21, but the Phoenix pulled away again. A three pointer from Adams, a couple free throws and a layup from Frazier plus a jumper from Bean gave the Phoenix a 13 point lead, which would be their largest point advantage of the game.

The second half began with the Green Terror down 7 by a score of 35-28. It seemed the tables had turned at the start of the half as the Green Terror closed in on the Phoenix yet again. The Phoenix offense responded well and worked hard to get past McDaniel's strong defensive game. McDowell made some important plays driving in the paint and drawing in fouls along the way. Yet the Phoenix's lead was still whittled down by the Green Terror offense. An 11-2 run from the Phoenix put them back safely in the lead 62-51. The last part of the second half saw a sprinkling of fouls and shots from the free throw line. The Phoenix were triumphant by a final score of 71-66.

Inside the Box Score: The Green Terror's McWilliams was the game's leading scorer with 21 points. Frazier led the Phoenix in points this game with 17. He was followed by Adams who recorded yet another double-double with 16 points and 13 rebounds. McDowell was the only other Phoenix with double digits in the point column tonight this game as he recorded 14. Field goal percentage tonight was 40.4%-36.5% in favor of the visiting team. The Green Terror also out scored the Phoenix in the paint 32-22. The Phoenix capitalized in other areas tonight however as they outscored their opponents 5:3 off the turnover.
