Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Phoenix Careen Past Crusaders

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - The Wilson College women's basketball team dominated tonight against the Christendom College Crusaders (0-5). The Phoenix, now 5-6 overall on the season, defeated the Crusaders 72-51.

How It Happened: The Phoenix out scored the Crusaders 20-9 in the first quarter. Freshman Michaela Singer (Annville, Pa.) was first on the scoreboard tonight with a three-pointer. Junior Jordyn Day (Richmond, Va) was next in line with another three-pointer. Then junior Lindsey Purvis (Fort Myers, Fl) got things going in the paint with a layup. The Phoenix continued to score in what was becoming a 15-2 run rounded out by junior Kristen Burdo (Norristown, Pa.) who was on fire inside the paint in the first quarter. A jumper from the Crusaders' Rose Nyman at the 4:26 mark gave the Crusaders just 4 total points while the Phoenix led with 15. Fifteen points quickly turned into 17 as junior Jasmine Wallace (Detroit, MI) scored a layup. The second quarter started with another three-pointer for the Phoenix from Day. Junior Amber Watkins (Honesdale, Pa) then landed a three pointer. Then Singer had a slick steal and took it to the paint for 2. Despite some great moments, the Crusaders edged the Phoenix out in points in the second 19-15. They closed the Phoenix's lead down to only 7 points as the teams headed to the break 35-28 in favor of the home team.

The Phoenix made sure they wouldn't be caught in the third quarter as they racked up 27 points to the Crusaders' 11. Singer couldn't be stopped as scored bucket after bucket and added another steal to her stat sheet tonight. Burdo and junior Ashley Henderson (Upper Marlboro, Md.) continued to drive in the paint for the Phoenix as well. The Phoenix had secured a 23 point lead by the time the fourth quarter was ready to start. Watkins made a great play as she stole the ball and passed it off to Wallace who gave it to Day who was waiting on the other end of the court to float the ball in the net. Things slowed down for the Phoenix in the later part of the quarter but they came out with a big win and a final score of 72-51.

Inside the Box Score: The Phoenix scored 29 points off turnovers tonight. The Phoenix also outscored their opponent 32-22 in the paint and showed more depth from their bench than their opponents with 19 bench points to the Crusaders' 6. Singer led the Phoenix in scoring tonight with 16 points followed by Day with 14 and Henderson with 12. Purvis racked up 16 rebounds tonight, a season high for her.

Up Next: The Phoenix's next game is Wednesday, January 10, at Penn State Berks.
