Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Phoenix Fall Short Against Chargers

LANCASTER, Pa. - The Phoenix lost a tough game in their first NEAC contest of the season. After a hard fought battle, the Phoenix fell to the Lancaster Bible Chargers 51-52. The Phoenix now have a record of 3-3 overall and 0-1 in the conference, and the Chargers move to 2-2 overall and 1-0 in the NEAC.

How It Happened: The Phoenix maintained a strong lead throughout most of the first and second quarters. Various Phoenix added points to the scoreboard early on in the game. Junior Jasmine Wallace (Detroit, MI) scored a smooth lay-up in the paint, but it was quickly answered with a bucket from the Chargers. Next a lay-up for the Chargers put them up 4-2, but after a response from junior Lindsey Purvis (Fort Myers, Fl) and a three-pointer from freshman Michaela Singer (Annville, Pa.), the Phoenix led 7-4. From that point they only continued to increase their lead. By the end of the first half the Phoenix finished on top 24-20.

The Chargers went scoreless more than two minutes into the second half, and their scoreless streak was broken only by a free throw. A subsequent lay-up from Purvis gave the Phoenix their largest lead of the night, an 11 point advantage over the Chargers 32-21. Yet after that point, the Phoenix's offense began to drop in comparison to the advances of the Chargers. The Chargers had improved their field goal percentage from 31.3% in the second quarter to 50% in the second. The Phoenix threw more shots at the basket, but couldn't keep up wih the number of buckets the Chargers were sinking, or so it seemed. They managed to pull ahead and take the lead once more before the third period ran out, but the Chargers were the team to begin the fourth period with a slight 38-37 advantage. The score was tied up six times and the lead exchanged several during the fourth period as the two teams fought neck and neck. A free throw gave the Chargers the last bucket of the night and they won by only one point, 52-51.

Inside the Box Score: Purvis led the Phoenix tonight in scoring with 18 points. Both teams scored 28 points in the paint, but the Phoenix scored more points off turnovers than the Chargers 19-10. The Chargers, on the other hand, had a strong edge in overall field goal percentage over the Phoenix 40.4%-29.5%.

Up Next: The Phoenix's next game is at home against Bryn Athyn College on Saturday, December 2, at 3:00 p.m.
