Phoenix Flounce Aggies

GRANTHAM, Pa. - Today the Phoenix continued tournament play in the Messiah Tip-Off Classic as they went up against Delaware Valley University. The Phoenix soared past the Aggies 81-75. This moves the Phoenix up to 2-1 on the season and the Aggies are now 0-3.

How It Happened: The Phoenix began the half with aggressive play in the paint, and they managed a seven point run before the Aggies even scored. Freshman Zachary Powell (Manassas, Va.) scored a lay-up that put the Phoenix back up to a seven point lead, and then junior Keion Adams (Gaithersburg, Md.) hit a lay-up that put the Phoenix back up by seven again with a score of 11-4. For the first five minutes of play the Phoenix responded to the Aggie's buckets, which allowed them to maintain the lead they had established with their early run. But the Aggies began to gain on the Phoenix through a combination of free throws and points in the paint. They nearly tied the score up 14-15 at one point. But a couple free throws and then a couple three-pointers, the first one by junior Ian Frazier (Palmyra, Pa.) and the second by freshman Rashaan Bean (San Antonio, Tx), gave the Phoenix a more comfortable lead. The Aggies continued to play catch up though, making the score 24-25 with only five minutes left in the half. Yet the Phoenix refused to be caught, as they closed out the half with a seven point lead 35-28.

Frazier's scoring was prolific in the second half, leading the team with 13 points for the second period. Senior Willie McDowell (Baltimore, MD) put considerable points up on the scoreboard as well, tallying 11. The Phoenix led by a nine point margin for a considerable amount of the half. Twice Adams gave the Phoenix even more of a point margin with a lay-up and a three-pointer. While the Aggies were playing catch up most of the game, they finally gained a 72-71 lead with only 2:23 left. But several poorly timed fouls by the Aggies gave the Phoenix a run of free throws, and they took the victory 81-75.

Inside the Box Score: Adams led the Phoenix statistically with 19 total points and 9 rebounds. Frazier also tallied 19 points today. Next in line for points was Bean wih 14 and McDowell with 13. The Phoenix maintained an edge in shooting accuracy over the Aggies 50%-44.3%. The Phoenix also scored 27 points off turnovers as opposed to the Aggies' 19.

Up Next: The Phoenix's next game will be their home opener against Bridgewater College at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, November 21.
