Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Phoenix Victorious in Season Opener

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Tonight the Wilson College women's basketball team opened the 2017-2018 season against the Nittany Lions of Penn State Mont Alto. The Phoenix came out on top 83-79 to give them a record of 1-0. The Nittany Lions now have a record of 1-2.

How It Happened: The Phoenix started off with a ten point run that burned the competition early on. In that run freshman Michaela Singer (Annville, Pa.) led with a three-pointer, and sophomore Lindsey Purvis (Fort Myers, Fl) scored her first bucket of the night with a jumper in the paint. The Nittany Lions were only able to get two points on the scoreboard before the Phoenix served another run that gave them a 14 point lead. The point gap slowly closed as the quarter went on, but the Phoenix still ended with a nine point lead 23-14 in the first. The Nittany Lions kept pushing though, and they opened the second quarter with an eight point run. Sophomore Ashley Henderson (Upper Marlboro, Md.) was the one to break the competitor's streak with a three-pointer. By the end on the first half, however, the Nittany Lions had tied the score up 34-34.

The competition in the second half got tighter, but the Phoenix were able to pull ahead early in the half to take a 49-38 lead. Junior Jasmine Wallace (Detroit, MI) stole the ball and took it to the paint for a lay-up not once but two times, back to back. Sophomore Jordyn Day (Richmond, Va) got the last bucket of the Phoenix's run before the Nittany Lions scored again. The Phoenix were still able to end the third quarter with a comfortable 63-55. The Nittany Lions weren't backing down though. Charity Miller opened the quarter with the first of what would be a series of three pointers that was detrimental to the Phoenix's lead. The Nittany Lions' Julianne Noveras made two three-point buckets in a row to tie the game up 66-66. Yet Purvis scored a couple lay-ups to put the Phoenix back on top. The last point of the game was a free throw from Purvis, which gave the Phoenix a victorious final score of 83-79.

Inside the Box Score: Purvis led the Phoenix tonight with 28 total points. She was followed by Henderson who had 15 points and Day who had 14. The Nittany Lions had a 43% field goal percentage while the Phoenix had 41.5% accuracy. Still, the Phoenix out scored their opponents in the paint 50-28.

Up Next: The Phoenix travel to Madison, New Jersey to tip off against Drew University in the Rose City Classic on Friday, November 17, at 6:00 p.m.
