Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Phoenix Whack Gophers

TOWSON, Md. - The Wilson College men's basketball team opened the 2017-18 season on the road at Goucher College. The Phoenix (1-0) defeated the Gophers (0-1) by a final score of 67-63.

How It Happened:  In the opening half, the two teams battled back and forth and while the Phoenix never led, the Gophers largest lead was only six points and that came with just over six minutes remaining in the half. Back-to-back layups by senior Willie McDowell (Baltimore, MD, Augusta Fells Savage Institute) cut the Gophers lead to two points, however the hosts would again push the lead up to six points with just over a minute to go in the half. The Phoenix would close the half on a 6-0 run using a pair of free throws by McDowell, a layup by junior Keion Adams (Gaithersburg, Md., Seneca Valley) and a pair of free throws by freshman Zachary Powell (Manassas, Va., Osbourn) to tie the game at 29-29 going to the break. Sophomore Rashaan Bean (San Antonio, Tx, Forest Park) gave the Phoenix their first lead of the game with a three-pointer to open the second half. Just before the midway point of the half, the Phoenix used an 8-0 run, highlighted by a monster dunk from Adams to take their first double-digit lead at 46-36. The Phoenix lead, which grew to as many as eleven points, was whittled away and the team trailed by two points with five minutes to go. Trailing by three points with a minute to go, Bean hit a bucket in the paint to cut the deficit to 1 point. After a missed shot by the Gophers, junior Ian Frazier (Palmyra, Pa., Palmyra) scored an old fashioned three-point play to put the Phoenix ahead by two with thirty-eight seconds to go. Another defensive stop by the Phoenix and a desperation foul by the Gophers put Frazier back at the free throw line and he calmly sank both free throws to push the lead to four with eighteen seconds left and the team would go on to win by that margin 67-63.

Inside the Box Score: Four Phoenix finished the game in double digits led by Powell with 14 points. Frazier added 13 points, while Adams and McDowell tallied 11 points each. Adams also had a double-double for the game as he recorded a game high 14 rebounds. The Phoenix held a 32-26 edge in points in the paint and had a 44-40 advantage on the boards.
