FREDERICK, Md. - The Wilson College field hockey team hit the road for a non-conference match at Hood College. The Phoenix (7-4) defeated the Blazers (2-10) by a final score of 1-0.
How It Happened: In what was a defensive struggle for most of the match, the Phoenix offense started to put some pressure on the Blazers defense a little over eight minutes in as a pair of penalty corners by freshman
Allison Reber (Narvon, Pa., Garden Spot) led to a shot by freshman
Kailey Mixell (Gettysburg, Pa., Gettysburg) for the first shot attempt of the game. Although Mixell's shot was wide, the offense continued to control possession and about a minute later senior
Miranda Long (Catawissa, Pa., Southern Columbia) rattled the back of the cage to put the Phoenix ahead 1-0. Mixell and freshman
Michaela Singer (Annville, Pa., Annville-Cleona) would put shots on goal later in the half, but the Blazers goalkeeper was able to record a save on both attempts. The Phoenix would take the 1-0 lead into the break as their defense was solid and did not allow a single shot from the Blazers. The defensive battle continued for the entirety of the second half. Mixell and sophomore
Katie Shank (Waynesboro, Pa., Waynesboro) took the only shots for the Phoenix in the half and the Phoenix defense limited the Blazers to a single shot attempt on the half.
Inside the Box Score: The Phoenix held a 7-1 advantage on shots and 5-0 edge in shots on goal. The visiting Phoenix also enjoyed the upper hand in penalty corners 10-5. Long has scored a goal in four of the last five contests and now has 8 on the season.
Up Next: Wilson returns to action on Saturday, October 14 with a NEAC battle at Keuka College.
