Phoenix Fizzle Against Wolves

KEUKA PARK, NY - Today the Wilson College field hockey team lost 1-2 to the Keuka College Wolves in NEAC competition. The Phoenix are now 7-5 overall and 0-2 in the NEAC. The Wolves now have a record of 3-11 and 2-1 in the NEAC.

How It Happened: The Wolves had the first shot of the game but it was blocked by the Wilson defense. Afterwards, things heated up for the Phoenix offense with three strong shots, one of which was a shot on goal from senior Miranda Long (Catawissa, Pa.). The two teams went back and forth offensively, each making aggressive forays into the other's defensive zone. Yet despite good chances on either side of the field, neither team was able to score in the first half. The Wolves got on the scoreboard less than two minutes into the second half, however, when Alysa Maddeleno got her fourth goal of the season. The Wolves continued to hunt the Phoenix down as they shot multiple times to keep their momentum going after their first goal. But the Phoenix dominated possession for a while, during which time they had several scoring chances. It was a penalty stroke goal that gave the Wolves a second goal making the game 2-0. But the Phoenix remained aggressive, and freshman Allison Reber (Narvon, Pa.) scored barely more than a minute later, assisted by junior Payton Dziemburski (Rising Sun, Md.). The remainder of the game was void of both shots and goals, and it ended 2-1 in favor of the hosting Wolves.

Inside the Box Score: The Wolves out shot the Phoenix 11-9 overall but both teams had six shots each on goal. The Wolves took the advantage in penalty corners 13-3. Freshman Kailey Mixell (Gettysburg, Pa.) had two shots today as did Long. 

Up Next: The Phoenix next game is a NEAC contest against Bryn Athyn College at home on Tuesday, October 17, at 4:00 p.m.
