Nittany Lions Roll Phoenix

READING, Pa. - The Wilson College men's soccer team hit the road for a North Eastern Athletic Conference match-up with Penn State Berks. The Nittany Lions (9-8-1, 7-2-1- NEAC) defeated the Phoenix (6-9-2, 3-3 NEAC) by a final score of 5-1.

How It Happened: The Nittany Lions struck first in the twelfth minute as Brendan Valverde knocked a shot into the left side of the goal for a 1-0 lead. Later in the half, the Nittany Lions scored again, this time on a cross to the middle that was knocked into the corner of the goal for a 2-0 advantage. The Phoenix finally got their first shot on goal with about six minutes left in the half as sophomore Javier Gonzalez-Sanchez (Madrid, Spain, Colegio Fray Luis de Leon) ripped a shot but couldn't beat the keeper and the visitors trailed 2-0 at the break. Early in the second half the Nittany Lions tacked on a pair of goals in less than 30 seconds to push the lead to 4-0. After another Nittany Lions goal made the score 5-0, the Phoenix got shots on goal from freshman René Quintanilla (San Salvador, El Salvador, Chambersburg), senior Shayne Ray (Sharptown, Md., Mardela), and finally sophomore Oliver Perry (London, England, Okanagan Secondary). Perry was able to put the ball over the keeper and into the goal with less than a minute remaining in the match to make the final score 5-1.

Inside the Box Score: The Nittany Lions held a 10-4 advantage in shot on goal while the Phoenix held the 6-5 edge in corner kicks. Perry scored for the third straight contest and his 4 goals on the season is tied for second on the team.

Up Next: Wilson makes its first appearance in the post-season as the Phoenix will travel to take on Penn State Abington, the top seed in the South Division, on Tuesday at 2:00 p.m.
