Phoenix Fall in Post-Season Debut

ABINGTON, Pa. - The Wilson College men's soccer team made its first ever appearance in the post-season this afternoon as the Phoenix (6-10-2) took on the top seed of the North Eastern Athletic Conference South Division, Penn State Abington on the road. The Nittany Lions (13-6) won a tight match by the final score of 1-0.

How It Happened: Despite missing leading scorer Ethan Russ (Honolulu, Hawaii, Radford) for the match, the Phoenix offense looked like it might get going early as sophomore Oliver Perry (London, England, Okanagan Secondary) fired off a shot that was just high in the opening minutes. A header shot by the Nittany Lions followed less than two minutes later, but sophomore goalkeeper Dan Perry (London, England, Okanagan Secondary) was able to record the save. Just before the midway point of the first half, junior Aaron Russ (Honolulu, Hawaii) took a header that missed just wide and after that the Phoenix offense shut down for the rest of the match with the exception of a shot that was blocked by freshman René Quintanilla (San Salvador, El Salvador, Chambersburg). In the opening minutes of the second half the Nittany Lions offense began to apply some pressure with a three shots in a row over a two minute span. Dan Perry was able to save the first shot and the second shot was blocked, however the third shot came off of a long throw in and sneaked in at the low left post to spot the Nittany Lions the only goal of the match. From that point on the Nittany Lions defense did not allow the Phoenix to take a shot and the hosts would go on for the 1-0 win.

Inside the Box Score: The Nittany Lions held an 18-3 advantage in shots and a 2-1 edge in corner kicks. Dan Perry recorded 7 saves in the match.

Up Next: This concludes the historic season for the 2017 men's soccer team.
