Bobcats Pounce on Phoenix


FROSTBURG, Md. - The Wilson College field hockey team stepped out of conference to battle Frostburg State University this evening. The host Bobcats (5-13) edged the Phoenix (9-6) by a final score of 3-1.

How It Happened: The Bobcats wasted no time getting on the board as Ivy Meissner fired a shot that was stopped by freshman goalkeeper Krista Nayadley (Hampton, VA, Hampton), but Meissner was able to get her own rebound and put in the goal for a 1-0 lead less than six minutes into the match. After two more saves by Nayadley, the Phoenix offense fired off its first shot when senior Miranda Long (Catawissa, Pa., Southern Columbia) took a pass from Kaitlynne Brown (Cassville, Pa., Southern Huntingdon County) and rattled the back of the cage to tie the match at 1-1 in the twenty-sixth minute. However, the Bobcats quickly responded as they scored their second goal of the match just four minutes later to take a 2-1 lead. Three more shots on goal for the Bobcats came before the break but Nayadley collected saves on each one to keep the score at 2-1 at halftime. Midway through the second half the Phoenix had a good opportunity to tie the game with a flurry of three shots in a fifteen second span, but they couldn't break through. Three minutes later the Bobcats put their third goal on the board and that 3-1 lead would hold up as the Phoenix would get no closer in the 3-1 loss.

Inside the Box Score: The Bobcats held a 15-6 advantage in shots on goal and a 13-7 edge in penalty corners. Nayadley recorded a career high 12 saves in goal. Long scored a goal for the third straight contest.

Up Next: Wilson will travel to Keuka College for the NAC West Division championship game on Saturday.
