KEUKA PARK, N.Y. - The Wilson College field hockey team took on Keuka College in the NAC West Division Championship game this afternoon. After a tight, scoreless first half, the Wolves (5-12, 2-2 NEAC) pulled away form the Phoenix (9-6, 2-2 NEAC) in the second half to take the championship by a final score of 4-0.
How It Happened: The Wolves offense pressured the Phoenix defense all match long. Senior goalkeeper
Kayla Butts (Pasadena, Md., Chesapeake) recorded four saves in the first half while the Phoenix offense only took four shots in the opening half. Freshman
Michaela Singer (Annville, Pa., Annville-Cleona) put a shot on goal as time ran out in the half, but the Wolves goalkeeper was able to keep it out of the cage and the teams headed to the break in a scoreless tie. In the second half the Wolves continued to dominate and broke the scoreless tie less than two minutes in as Hannah Moon tipped in a s hot at the left post. Less than ten minutes later the Wolves struck again to push their lead to 2-0. Six minutes later, near the fifty-first minute, Moon struck again to put the Wolves up 3-0. The Phoenix offense couldn't muster a response as the offense only took one shot in the second half. A goal by the Wolves as time expired would make the final score 4-0 in favor of the hosts.
Inside the Box Score: The Wolves out shot the Phoenix 25-5 and held a commanding 19-1 edge in penalty corners. Singer and freshman classmates
Jenna Carty (Chambersburg, Pa., Greencastle-Antrim) and
Kailey Mixell (Gettysburg, Pa., Gettysburg) were the only Phoenix to take shots in the match. Butts recorded 8 saves in the loss.
