Phoenix Cage Tigers in Double OT

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - The Wilson College men's soccer team hosted SUNY Cobleskill in North Eastern Athletic Conference play this afternoon at Kris's Meadow. The Phoenix (6-7-2, 4-4-0 NEAC) got a late goal from sophomore Oliver Perry (London, England, Okanagan Secondary) in the second overtime to beat the Tigers (5-9-2, 3-4-1 NEAC) by a final score of 2-1.

How It Happened: The action was fast and furious all game long as both teams put a lot of pressure on the opposing defenses. The two teams combined for seven first half shots, but only the Phoenix put them on goal but both of those shots were saved and the teams headed to the half in a scoreless tie. In the second half, just over thirteen minutes in, the Tigers were called for a foul in the box setting up a penalty kick for the Phoenix. Junior Kevin Lysaght (Toms River, NJ., Toms River North) took the shot and ripped it past the goalkeeper to give the Phoenix a 1-0 lead. An answer by the Tigers came in the eighty-second minute as the Phoenix defense failed to clear the ball from in front of the goal and the Tigers knocked it in to tie the game at 1-1. Both teams would get off one more shot in regulation, but neither connected and the teams headed to overtime. Senior Shayne Ray (Sharptown, Md., Mardela) and Perry would both challenge the Tigers goalkeeper but neither could score. A shot that sailed wide of the goal was the only attempt for the Tigers in the first overtime period. In the second overtime, Perry took a shot that missed wide in the opening minute. However, he would get one more chance five minutes later as the ball took a high bounce in front of the goal and Perry leaped up and headed the ball past the keeper for the game winner.

Inside the Box Score: The Phoenix held a 7-3 advantage in shots on goal while the Tigers had a 4-3 edge in corner kicks. Perry's goal was his second of the season. Junior goalkeeper Dan Perry (London, England, Okanagan Secondary) recorded 2 saves in the match.
