Phoenix Rally Past Express in OT

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - In a critical North Eastern Athletic Conference match-up, the Wilson College field hockey team hosted Wells College this afternoon. The Phoenix (9-5, 2-2 NEAC) rallied form a 3 goal deficit to beat the Express (2-12, 2-2 NEAC)  4-3 in overtime. The win moves the Phoenix past the Express and into the North Atlantic Conference (NAC) West Division Championship game versus Keuka College to be played at Keuka next Saturday, October 28 at 1:00 p.m.

How It Happened: Both teams had some missed opportunities early in the half, but weren't able to convert until the Express gathered a rebound off of a blocked shot and knocked it in for a 1-0 lead in the nineteenth minute. A few minutes later the Express added to their lead knocking in a shot from the right side for a 2-0 lead. While the Phoenix offense struggled to gain traction, the Express kept rolling along as the visitors added a late goal just before the half to take a commanding 3-0 lead into the break. The second half proved to be the complete opposite of the first half. Halftime adjustments by the Phoenix paid off quickly as the offense fired its first shot of the half less than two minutes in. The pressure from the Phoenix offense was unrelenting and finally broke through when freshman Kailey Mixell (Gettysburg, Pa., Gettysburg) took a cross from junior Tiffany Cobb (Johnstown, Colo., Newbury Park) and rattled the cage to make the score 3-1. Less than eight minutes later after three penalty corners by the Phoenix, senior Kallie Butts (Pasadena, Md., Chesapeake) fired a shot on goal and the ball came off the goalkeeper to senior Miranda Long (Catawissa, Pa., Southern Columbia) who stuffed it in from the left post to pull the Phoenix within one goal at 3-2. Momentum was clearly on the Phoenix side and five minutes later Long struck again, this time on a fast break cross from freshman Michaela Singer (Annville, Pa., Annville-Cleona) who fed it to Long on the left side and she hit the back of the cage to knot the game at 3-3. Regulation would not be enough to decide this match as the teams headed to overtime. In the extra session, the Express tried to end it early with a pair of shots on goal, but senior goalkeeper Kayla Butts (Pasadena, Md., Chesapeake) stopped both shots. Two more shots and a pair of penalty corners by the Express led to a Phoenix timeout to discuss strategy. Out of the timeout the Phoenix got a penalty corner but weren't able to take advantage. However, ninety seconds later Long delivered a pass from the left side to Singer who ripped a shot into the cage for the winner.

Inside the Box Score: The Phoenix out shot the Express 6-5 in shots on goal and held a 15-8 edge in penalty corners. This was the sixth time this season that Singer and Long scored in the same match and the Phoenix have won all six of those matches. Singer and Long are also tied for first in the NEAC with 11 goals scored each.

Up Next: Wilson steps out of conference for a match-up at Frostburg State University on Tuesday at 6:00 p.m.
