Phoenix Blank Lions


CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - The Wilson College field hockey team hosted Bryn Athyn in a North Eastern Athletic Conference battle. The host Phoenix (8-5, 1-2 NEAC) defeated the Lions (2-10, 0-3 NEAC) by a final score of 1-0.

How It Happened: A relatively slow first half, saw each team have good scoring opportunities, but neither could convert. The first scoring chance for the Phoenix came off a penalty corner when freshman Jenna Carty (Chambersburg, Pa.) took aim at the goal, but the Lions goalkeeper recorded the save. It wasn't until the thirty minute mark that the Phoenix would get another chance, this time it was sophomore Katie Shank (Waynesboro, Pa.) who took a shot and ot her own rebound and ripped another shot attempt, but the Lions goalie was able to keep the ball out of the cage. Just before the half, the Lions Sabrina Colbridge took two shots by senior goalkeeper Kayla Butts (Pasadena, Md.) was up to the challenge and kept the visitors off the scoreboard as the teams headed to the half in a scoreless tie. early in the second half, the Phoenix used nice ball movement to set up their first goal. Freshman Kailey Mixell (Gettysburg, Pa.) fed a pass across the front of the cage from the right side and senior Miranda Long (Catawissa, Pa.) was at the far post and knocked it in to put the Phoenix ahead 1-0. Each team would only put one more shot on goal the remainder of the match and the Phoenix claimed the 1-0 victory.

Inside the Box Score: The Phoenix out shot the Lions 7 to 3 and also had a 7-2 edge in penalty corners. Butts recorded her fourth shutout of the season by stopping all three shots she faced. Long's goal was her ninth of the season and she now leads the Phoenix with 22 points on the year.
