Phoenix Drop a Duo

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Phoenix traveled to Washington, D.C. where they competed in a pair of NEAC matches against SUNY Cobleskill and Morrisvile State College. The Phoenix lost the first match 2-3 against the Cobleskill Fighting Tigers and lost match number two against the Morrisville Mustangs 0-3. The Fighting Tigers now have a record of 7-10 and 2-4 in the NEAC, and the Mustangs are now 16-3 and 6-1 in the NEAC. The Phoenix are 1-13 overall and 1-6 in the NEAC.

How It Happened: The first match against the Fighting Tigers went into 5 sets. The Phoenix won the first set 25-15. They had strong attacks and enjoyed the benefits of numerous service errors from the Fighting Tigers. But the Fighting Tigers bucked back in set number two and took the win 25-16. Things remained balanced for the start of the set, but the Phoenix were unable to recover after the Fighting Tigers had a 9 point run. The third set was 25-19 Fighting Tigers as they clawed their way towards the win. But the Phoenix didn't go down easy and won the fourth set a crushing 25-10. The Phoenix hammered kill after kill and got an 8 point scoring run. They also recorded three aces in the fourth set. The fifth set went to the Fighting Tigers who won by only two, a close 16-14 score. The Phoenix took the lead several times, but each time the Fighting Tigers caught up until they finally pulled ahead for the 3-2 match victory.

The second match against the Mustangs lasted only three sets. In the first set, which ended 25-10, a 7 point run followed by a 4 point run kept the Mustangs comfortably in the lead. The Mustangs offense continued to trot past the Phoenix, and in the second set they won 25-11. The Phoenix's attacks weren't enough to tame their opponents, and they lost the third set 25-8. The Mustangs took the match 3-0.

Inside the Box Score: In the first match against the Fighting Tigers Belen Aldecosea (Miami, Fl.) led the Phoenix offense with 12 kills. Freshman Leslie Farnes (Coconut Creek, Fl.) had a season high 30 assists. Freshman Sierra Hill (Hagerstown, Md.) recorded five aces today, which was also a record for her. Sophomore Hannah Quarry recorded a season high 18 digs as well. The Phoenix had 42 kills against 27 errors on 134 total attempts for a .112 attack percentage. The Fighting Tigers had 31 kills against 20 errors on 123 total attempts for a .089 attack percentage.

In the second match against the Mustangs Laury Jean Baptiste (Fort Lauderdale, Fl.) led the Phoenix in kills with 6. She also led the Phoenix in digs with 6. Farnes recorded 10 assists. The Phoenix had 10 kills against 27 errors on 75 total attempts for a -.227 attack percentage. The Mustangs had 30 kills against 9 errors on 64 total attempts for a .328 attack percentage.
