Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Phoenix Stopped by Wildcats

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Today the Wilson College women's basketball team took on North Eastern Athletic Conference challenger, the Pennsylvania College of Technology Wildcats. In a tightly contested game where the Phoenix maintained the lead for the first three quarters, the Wildcats pulled out their first victory of the season, a 67-72 win against the hosting team.

Wildcats (1-8, 1-4 NEAC) senior Alicia Ross scored the first bucket of the game, but the Phoenix (2-7, 0-5 NEAC) were quick to react as sophomore Jordyn Day (Richmond, Va) hit a three-pointer, setting off the Phoenix's momentum. Five minutes later the Phoenix had pushed themselves to a 12 point lead, but the Wildcats bridged the gap with a series of three-pointers that gave them 16 points to the Phoenix's 20 at the end of the quarter. Sophomore Lindsey Purvis (Fort Myers, Fl) added a lay-up to the scoreboard for the Phoenix early on in the second. After two good free-throws from the opposition, Day racked up another three-pointer. The Wildcats answered with a jumper, but Phoenix sophomore Ashley Henderson (Upper Marlboro, Md.) added a jump shot of her own in response. The Wildcats outscored the Phoenix 15-13, but the half closed out 33-31 in favor of the home team.

In the third, roles reversed from the previous quarter as the Phoenix outscored the Wildcats 15-13. The Wildcats kept a close trail on the Phoenix, tying up the game twice--first off a free-throw, and then again off a lay-up from Ross. The Phoenix pushed ahead and the quarter ended with a bucket from sophomore Amber Watkins (Honesdale, Pa) that put the Phoenix ahead 48-44. In the fourth quarter, the Wildcats took the lead. The Phoenix couldn't match their opposition's scoring, and the Wildcats took the win 67-72.

This was the Wildcats' first win of the season, pushing their record up to 1-8 overall all and 1-4 in the conference. The Phoenix's record moves  to 2-7 overall, 0-5 in the NEAC.

The Phoenix offense was paced by Day with 24 points. Purvis also put up 14 points for the Phoenix, and Henderson scored 9 points and had four assists. Wildcats Senior Alicia Ross had a double double with 36 points and 12 rebounds.

The Phoenix return to action on their home court Tuesday, January 10 with a 6:00 p.m. tip against the Penn State Abington Nittany Lions.
