Nittany Lions Pounce on Women's Hoops

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - The Wilson College women's basketball team hosted Penn State Abington in a North Eastern Athletic Conference match up this evening. The Nittany Lions defeated the Phoenix by a 76-55 margin.

The visiting Nittany Lions (5-5, 3-2 NEAC) came out of the gate with a 14-0 run in the first five minutes of the opening quarter. The Phoenix (2-8, 0-6 NEAC) got on the board when freshman Kristen Burdo (Norristown, Pa., Perkiomen School) knocked down a pair of free throws midway through the quarter. A 13-3 run by the Phoenix, including six points by Burdo, pulled the hosts within 17-13 and at the end of one quarter the Phoenix trailed 22-17. The offense went cold for the Phoenix in the second quarter as the Nittany Lions pushed their lead out to 15 points heading to the break.

During the third quarter, the Phoenix couldn't close the gap despite buckets form sophomore's
Lindsey Purvis (Fort Myers, Fl, South Fort Myers) and Amber Watkins (Honesdale, Pa, Honesdale) and junior Amber Jones (Waldorf, Md. , Maurice J McDonough ). While the teams played a tight quarter the Nittany lines increased their lead to 16 points and carried a 58-42 lead into the fourth quarter. Burdo and Purvis continued to provide the offense for the Phoenix in the fourth quarter and sophomore Jordyn Day (Richmond, Va, Varina) added a late three, but the Nittany Lions would go on for the 76-55 victory.

Purvis led the Phoenix with 20 points and a season high 9 rebounds while adding 7 steals and 3 blocks. Burdo tallied 14 points and 6 rebounds while Day was the only other Phoenix in double figures with 11 points.

Wilson returns to action at home this Thursday versus Bryn Athyn at 6:00 p.m.
