Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Phoenix Soar Higher Than Eagles

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - The Wilson College men's basketball team hosted the College of Saint Elizabeth in a North Eastern Athletic Conference match-up this evening. The Phoenix won an exciting 104-100 decision over the Eagles.

In a high scoring game that featured major swings in momentum, the Phoenix (2-6, 2-2 NEAC) were able to keep their composure most of the night against the high pressure defense of the Eagles (2-6, 1-3 NEAC). The first big run of the game came midway through the first half as the Phoenix used a 10-0 run to take a 24-12 lead. Sophomore Ian Frazier (Palmyra, Pa., Palmyra) tallied 4 points during that span including a steal and fast-break layup. After the Eagles pulled within 9 points, back to back three-pointers by junior Darren Mohamed (Viera, Fla. , SPIRE Institute ) and a layup by freshman Rashaan Bean (San Antonio, Tx, Forest Park) gave the Phoenix a 17 point lead at 34-17. Later in the half, back to back baskets by junior Martez Beckett (Randallstown, Md., Chapelgate Christian) gave the Phoenix a 20 point advantage at 42-22. Just before the break the Eagles would hit a three-pointer of their own to get within 17 points at 57-40 as the teams went into the half.

The Eagles stormed out the locker room after the half scoring the first five points, before a three-pointer by Frazier put the Phoenix back up by fifteen points. However, an 18-3 run by the Eagles over the next three minutes would tie the game at 63-63 with just under fourteen minutes left. The Phoenix responded big time with a 15-0 run of their own highlighted by three-point baskets by Mohammed, Martez Beckett, Bean and junior Keion Adams (Gaithersburg, Md., Seneca Valley) to put the hosts up 78-63 at the halfway point of the second half. The Phoenix held their largest lead of the half at 17 points with just over seven minutes to go, but the Eagles would chip away at the lead and pull within 4 points with one minute left. A late three-pointer by the Eagles pulled the visitors within 2 points with 12 seconds remaining, but free throws by seniors Marquis Nelson (Hagerstown, Md. , Edison High School ) and Kasdan Holder (Zebulon, N.C., East Wake) put the game away for the final score of 104-100.

The Phoenix went 7 of 10 from the free throw line in the final minute. Bean led the Phoenix attack with his first career double-double that included a career high 34 points and career high 10 rebounds. Bean led 5 Phoenix that scored in double digits as Nelson added a double-double with 13 points and 10 boards, Martez Beckett added 13 points, Mohammed tallied 12 points and Adams had 11 points. Frazier added a season high 4 steals for the Phoenix defense.

Wilson will be back in action at home tomorrow versus Penn College at 2:00 p.m.
