Knights Slay Phoenix in Men's Volleyball

GLENSIDE, Pa. - The Wilson College men's volleyball team traveled to Arcadia University for a non-conference match-up this evening. The host Knights defeated the Phoenix by a score of 3-0 (25-17, 25-20, 25-14).

The Phoenix (1-4) jumped out to an early 4-2 lead in the opening set as freshman Nick Baxter (Denver, Pa., Cocalico) recorded a kill in the early going. The Knights (3-2) responded by scoring three straight points to take a 5-4 lead. With the help of a kill by sophomore Zachary McMaster (Gettysburg, Pa., New Oxford) and an ace by Baxter, the Phoenix rattled off 5 straight points to take a 9-5 advantage. Later in the set withe the Phoenix leading 14-11, the Knights would score 9 straight points to grab a 20-14 lead and would go on to take the opening set 25-17.

Trailing 15-9 in the second set, the Phoenix rallied by scoring six of the next seven points, highlighted by 2 kills by Baxter and a kill and ace from sophomore Zachary Zerr (Dallastown, Pa, Dallastown Area H.S.) to get within 16-15. The Knights responded by scoring five of the next six points. An ace by sophomore Michael Martin (Martinsburg, W.Va., Musselman ) was part of 3 straight points that brought the Phoenix within 21-19, but the Knights would close out the set strong with a 25-20 win.

The Phoenix took a 4-1 lead in the third set on the strength of a kills by Zerr and Baxter, but a 10-2 run by the Knights gave the hosts a solid 11-6 lead. The Phoenix couldn't gain any traction the rest of the sets and the Knights closed out the set 25-13 and the match 3-0.

For the match the Phoenix had 18 kills against 14 errors on 74 attempts for a .054 attacking percentage while the Knights 37 kills against 10 errors on 74 attempts for a .365 attacking percentage. Baxter led the Phoenix with 9 kills, while freshman Ian Firestone (York, Pa., York Suburban) paced the team with 11 assists and freshman Chance Wheeler (Giles County, Va., Giles ) led the team with 6 digs.

Wilson will be back in action this weekend as the team opens North Eastern Athletic Conference play in Utica, N.Y. versus Keuka College, Wells College and SUNY Poly.
