Wildcats Pounce on Women's Hoops

CAZENOVIA, N.Y. - The Wilson College women's basketball team wrapped up a weekend road trip with a North Eastern Athletic Conference contest versus Cazenovia College. The Wildcats topped the Phoenix by a score of 86-71.

The Wildcats (3-13, 2-8 NEAC) opened the game with an 8-0 run. A basket by sophomore
Lindsey Purvis (Fort Myers, Fl, South Fort Myers) put the Phoenix (3-15, 1-13 NEAC) on the board to make the score 8-2 in the early going. A pair of free throws by sophomore Jordyn Day (Richmond, Va, Varina) and a three-pointer by sophomore Amber Watkins (Honesdale, Pa, Honesdale) pulled the Phoenix within 10-7 midway through the opening quarter. Later in the quarter a layup by sophomore Ashley Henderson (Upper Marlboro, Md. , North Point ) pulled the Phoenix within 4 points, but the Wildcats ended the quarter by hitting three consecutive three-pointers and a 25-14 lead. During the second quarter the Wildcats pushed their lead to 16 points, but a pair of baskets by Purvis and a layup by Day pulled the Phoenix within 7 points with under five minutes left in the half. Again the Wildcats grew their lead to double digits, but a late three-pointer by Day pulled the Phoenix within 9 points at 41-32 heading to the break.

During the third quarter, the Wildcats used a 14-4 run to push their lead to 55-40 and held a 61-46 advantage after 3 quarters. The Phoenix pulled within 10 points early in the fourth quarter on a three-pointer by Day. After trailing by 13 points, again the Phoenix would get within 10 points at 68-58 on a layup by Henderson with 6:37 to go. However, the Wildcats answered with a 16-3 run to put the game out of reach as they would go on for the 86-71 victory.

For the game, the Wildcats shot 50% from the field while the Phoenix hit 43%. The Wildcats also held a 24-9 advantage in second chance points.

The Phoenix were led by Purvis, who collected her 5th double-double of the season with 22 points and 11 rebounds. Day added 22 points and 4 assists while Henderson tallied 12 points and 4 steals. 

Wilson will return to action on Wednesday, February 1 with a trip to Bryn Athyn.
