Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Second Half Surge Leads Wildcats Past Phoenix

CAZENOVIA, N.Y. - The Wilson College men's basketball team finished up a North Eastern Athletic Conference weekend trip with a visit to Cazenovia College. The host Wildcats defeated the Phoenix 76-66.

In a game that was a tale of two halves, the Phoenix (4-14, 4-10 NEAC) jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead on a jumper by senior
Marquis Nelson (Hagerstown, Md. , Edison High School ) and a three-pointer by freshman Rashaan Bean (San Antonio, Tx, Forest Park). The Wildcats (3-14, 3-7 NEAC) responded by scoring the next 5 points. After a few minutes of the teams exchanging missed shots, the Phoenix got a pair of three-pointers from senior Kasdan Holder (Zebulon, N.C., East Wake) and Nelson along with a basket from junior Keion Adams (Gaithersburg, Md., Seneca Valley) to put the team ahead 13-9 midway through the half. The Phoenix would continue their 17-2 run with a pair of three-pointers from Adams and a baskets from junior Martez Beckett (Randallstown, Md., Chapelgate Christian) and sophomore Ian Frazier (Palmyra, Pa., Palmyra) to grab a 23-9 lead. To finish out the half, the Wildcats would put together a 10-5 run to get within single digits as the Phoenix would take a 32-23 lead at the half.

During the second half the Wildcats chipped away at the Phoenix advantage, finally grabbing the lead at 49-48 with just under ten minutes left in regulation. The final ten minutes of the game was slowed significantly as fouls and free throws changed the pace of play. A pair of old-fashioned three-point plays put the Wildcats up 55-49. The next 9 points of the game came via the charity stripe and the Wildcats maintained a 4 point advantage with less than five minutes to play. The teams traded baskets over the next few minutes and layup by Adams with 1:22 to go pulled the Phoenix within 66-62, however the Wildcats would go 10 of 12 from the free throw line during the final minute as the Phoenix would only convert single baskets by Bean and Nelson.

The Wildcats shot extremely well from the free throw line, scoring more points from the charity stripe alone in the second half (24) than they did total in the first half (23) while shooting 28-for-31 for 90% for the game.

Bean led the Phoenix with his 5th double-double of the season with 19 points and 10 rebounds. Adams added 16 points and 8 rebounds, while Nelson joined them in double figures with 14 points.

Wilson will be back on the court on Wednesday, February 1 at Bryn Athyn.
