Mustangs Run Past Phoenix in Women's Hoops

MORRISVILLE, NY - Today the Wilson College women's basketball team was defeated in an NEAC contest versus the Morrisville Mustangs 73-40.

The game was scoreless for the first 1:30.  A jump shot from the Mustangs' (11-4, 6-2)  Marissa Woodard started a 6 point run for the team that was interrupted by Phoenix (3-14, 1-11) sophomore Jordyn Day (Richmond, Va) with a three-point field goal. And while sophomore Amber Watkins (Honesdale, Pa) had a steal against Woodard, who was the leading scorer of the game for the Mustangs, the Phoenix were unable to capitalize on it. The Mustangs were up 14-5 by the time sophomore Lindsey Purvis (Fort Myers, Fl) hit a lay-up to give the Phoenix 7 points for the quarter. In the second quarter, Teniera Prioleau (Baltimore, Md.) would contribute a three-pointer. Free throws kept scoring close at 12-14 Mustangs in the second, yet the lead they had gained in the first quarter gave them the upper hand  36-19 at half time.

The Mustang offense was prolific in the third quarter, scoring 25 points, the highest tally for any quarter during the game. Although the Phoenix had a strong fourth quarter and outscored the Mustangs 16-12, it was not enough to recover the deficit. The Mustangs took the victory 73-40.

The Phoenix offense was led by freshman Kristen Burdo (Norristown, Pa.) with 10 points and 9 boards followed by Purvis who had 9 points and 7 boards.

The Mustangs Marissa Woodard led their offense with 14 points and 7 rebounds. Charlotte Walker followed with 12 points and 9 rebounds.

The Phoenix tip-off versus Cazenovia College at 12:00 p.m. tomorrow, Sunday, January 29 in Cazenovia, NY.
