MORRISVILLE, NY - Today the Wilson College men's basketball team tipped off versus the Morrisville Mustangs in an NEAC contest. The Mustangs took the win 91-74.
The first half was tightly contested. While the Mustangs (10-5, 7-2) had the first field goal and established the lead for the early part of the first half, the Phoenix (4-13, 4-9) stayed close behind. The Mustangs' Kyle Peck had a lay-up, and sophomore
Ian Frazier (Palmyra, Pa.) responded with a three-pointer assisted by junior
Marquise Beckett (Randallstown, Md.). The teams exchanged points up and down the court. The Mustangs hit a lay-up, and Beckett hit one in response. Sophomore
Keion Adams (Gaithersburg, Md.) sailed a three-pointer into the net, and the Mustangs Trent Ward did the same. Another three-pointer from Frazier put the Phoenix within one point of the Mustangs 18-19 and it looked like the Mustangs might pull ahead again when Kenny Bonaparte scored for three right after. But it was senior
Kasdan Holder (Zebulon, N.C.) that gave the Phoenix the lead with a lay-up and a free-throw. Again, the Mustangs pulled past the Phoenix, and again the Phoenix took back the lead with a three from Frazier to spur it off. The score was close and the lead was exchanged several times towards the end of the half, but it ended in favor of the Phoenix 41-39.
The Mustangs scored nine straight points until Adams added three points to the Phoenix side of the scoreboard. A defensive rebound from the Mustangs' Trent Ward gave Jordan Hoose a fast break for a dunk. The Phoenix offense remained aggressive, however, and
Marquise Beckett had a steal that set up the court for a lay-up from freshman
Rashaan Bean (San Antonio, Tx) assisted by Adams, giving the Phoenix 59 points to the Mustangs' 73. The remainder of the game played out in favor of the Mustangs, and even though the Phoenix had held the lead at half-time the Mustangs trotted to a 91-74 victory.
Frazier paced the Phoenix offense. He had 5 three-pointers this game and 19 total points. Nelson followed with 18 points and five boards.
The Phoenix had a 41.3 scoring percentage and the Mustangs had 48.5.
The Phoenix will travel to play against Cazenovia College tomorrow at 2:00 p.m. tomorrow, Sunday, January 29.
