Phoenix Downed in Non-Conference Competition

OWINGS MILLS, MD - The Wilson College men's volleyball team traveled to Stevenson University for a tri-match versus Mount Saint Joseph and Stevenson University. 

The Phoenix (1-3) were defeated by the Mt. St. Joseph Lions (3-1) by scores of 25-16, 25-19, and 25-20 and by the Stevenson Mustangs (4-2) by scores of 25-16, 25-16, and 25-9.

The Lions took the lead early in the first set 7-2 after three straight kills. The Phoenix's sophomore Evan Hoke (Chambersburg, Pa.) and freshman Nick Baxter (Denver, Pa.) responded with back-to-back kills. The Lions would then score two more, but the Phoenix gained three more points, including an ace from Baxter, to put the score 7-10 Lions. Sophomore Aaron Hoke (Chambersburg, Pa.) contributed two kills, but the Lions held steadily to the lead 12-18. The Lions wrapped up the set with a 3-0 run, and the final score was 25-16.

The Lions began the second set with a 5-0 run, breaking their own streak with an error. The Phoenix regrouped and returned from timeout with a kill from Baxter with freshman Ian Firestone (York, Pa.) on the assist. The lions put up another 3 point run to give them a 14-4 lead. After the teams traded several points, the Phoenix put up a 5-0 run, including two kills from Aaron Hoke and an ace from Firestone to close the scoring margin 17-12. Scoring was even for the remainder of the set, but the Lions remained in the lead closing out the set 25-19.

In the third set, the Phoenix took the lead for the first time of the match. Kills from Baxter and sophomores Zachary Zerr (Dallastown, Pa) and Zachary McMaster (Gettysburg, Pa.) gave the Phoenix a strong presence in th start of the set. A 5-0 run gave the Lions the lead again, 7-3. The teams exchanged points, but three kills from Aaron Hoke put the score at a close 11-10 Lions. A kill from McMaster gave the Phoenix the lead. The set score was tied six times throughout the set, but a 4-0 run at the end gave the Lions the edge to pull out a 25-20 win.

For the match, the Phoenix had 25 kills against 22 errors on 103 attempts for a .029 hitting percentage.  Aaron Hoke and Baxter led the Phoenix with 8 kills and 7 kills respectively. Evan Hoke had a season high 13 digs.

In the second match versus Stevenson scoring was very close. After a tied score of 7-7, the Mustangs slowly pulled ahead and took the set 25-16. In the second set, the Mustangs pulled away from a 3-3 score with a 5-0 run, and while a kill from Baxter interrupted their flow, the Mustangs quickly resumed scoring. The Phoenix closed the score to 15-20 with an ace from Baxter, but the Mustangs ended the set 25-16. The Mustangs kept their momentum in third set, which ended 25-9 in their favor. The took the match 3-0.

For the match, the Phoenix had 14 kills against 15 errors on 69 attempts for a -.014 shooting percentage.

Wilson will be back in action Tuesday, January 31, at 7:30 p.m. versus Arcadia University.
