Phoenix Roundup Bison

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Wilson College women's basketball team hit the road for a North Eastern Athletic Conference contest with Gallaudet University. The Phoenix defeated the Bison by a score of 61-55 for their first conference win of the season.

The Phoenix (3-13, 1-11 NEAC) opened the game with a 6-2 run, getting baskets from sophomores
Jordyn Day (Richmond, Va, Varina) and Lindsey Purvis (Fort Myers, Fl, South Fort Myers) and a bucket by freshman Kristen Burdo (Norristown, Pa., Perkiomen School). The Bison (2-14, 2-10 NEAC) pulled even with the Phoenix at 10-10 but a late jumper by Day put the visitors ahead 12-10 after the opening quarter. During the second quarter the Phoenix continued to have balanced scoring as five different players scored in the quarter. The teams battled back and forth and neither team led by more than 4 points, however a three-point field goal by Day put the Phoenix ahead at the break 30-29.

The Phoenix used a 10-0 run in the third quarter, highlighted by a pair of layups from sophomore
Ashley Henderson (Upper Marlboro, Md. , North Point ), to take a 40-31 advantage. A run of 10-2 by the Bison pulled the hosts within 1 point with 33 seconds left in the period, but a pair of free throws from junior Amber Jones (Waldorf, Md. , Maurice J McDonough ) closed out the third quarter giving the Phoenix a 44-41 lead heading to the final period. During the fourth quarter the Phoenix grew their lead to as many as 10 points while getting buckets from 5 different players as the team went on for the 61-55 victory.

The Phoenix defense forced the Bison into 30 turnovers and the team converted those turnovers into 21 points. The Phoenix also held a 40-34 edge in points in the paint.

Purvis collected her fourth double-double of the season with 16 points and 13 rebounds while adding 4 blocks. Joining Purvis with double digit scoring was Henderson with 14 points, Day with 12 points and Burdo with 11 points.

Wilson will return to action this Saturday with a visit to Morrisville State.
