Phoenix Fall Short Against Wildcats

CHMABERSBURG, PA - In today's tightly contested game the Wilson College men's basketball team fell to NEAC opponent SUNY Polytechnic 92-84.

The Wildcats (9-6, 6-2 NEAC) had the first basket of the game, a lay-up from Peyton Griffiths. The Phoenix (4-11, 4-7 NEAC) then scored a three-pointer that came from the hands of junior Marquise Beckett (Randallstown, Md.) with sophomore Ian Frazier (Palmyra, Pa.) on the assist. A jump shot from senior Marquis Nelson (Hagerstown, Md.) gave the Phoenix the lead for the first time of the game with 10:07 left in the first half. Senior Kasdan Holder (Zebulon, N.C.) made an impressive offensive attack, getting the rebound from his own missed shot to score a lay-up. Kevin Williams of the Wildcats responded with a lay-up of his own, but junior Keion Adams (Gaithersburg, Md.) took back the lead with a three-pointer assisted by sophomore Dominique Walker (Smyrna, DE). The two teams exchanged the lead six times each in the first half. The Wildcats scoring percentage was 55.6% while the Phoenix's percentage was 43.3%, but the score remained a close 44-42 Wildcats at halftime.

Frazier scored the first basket of the half for the Phoenix, a lay-up with Martez Beckett (Randallstown, Md.) on the assist. After two missed shots for the Phoenix, Frazier sailed a three-pointer into the net to put the Phoenix up 60-58. Adams had four three-pointers in the half, missing only one of his attempts. Beckett got a rebound off a missed shot from Wildcats' Quayshaun Mitchell and took it up the court for a lay-up off the fast break. Mitchell made his next two buckets, putting the Wildcats up 78-77 with 3:24 left on the clock. The Wildcats held onto the lead for the remainder of the game, and the final score was 92-84.

The Phoenix offense was paced by Adams who had 32 points and half of the team's eight steals. Frazier tallied 15 points followed by freshman Rashaan Bean (San Antonio, Tx) with 11.

The Wildcats' Kevin Williams had a double-double. He recorded 38 points and 14 rebounds followed by Griffiths with 19 points, and Mitchell with 14.

The Wildcats' record moves to 9-6 overall and 6-2 in the NEAC, while the Phoenix move to 4-11 overall and 4-7 in the NEAC.

The Phoenix travel to Washington, D.C., Tuesday, January 24 for a 7:00 p.m. tip against Gallaudet University.
