Phoenix Slashed by Fighting Tigers

CHAMBERSBURG, PA - Today the Wilson College women's basketball team tipped off against NEAC opponent SUNY Cobleskill. The visiting Fighting Tigers took the victory 71-55.

The game began with a nine point run for the Fighting Tigers (7-6, 3-4). The Phoenix (2-12, 0-10) broke the scoring streak with a three-pointer from sophomore Jordyn Day (Richmond, Va). At the end of the first quarter the Phoenix were down 14-4. Sophomore Ashley Henderson (Upper Marlboro, Md.) hit a three-pointer that boosted the Phoenix offense, and junior Amber Jones (Waldorf, Md.) added two lay-ups to the Phoenix total. Freshman Kristen Burdo (Norristown, Pa.) caught a board and took it to net for a lay-up in the paint. But at the close of the half, the Phoenix trailed 37-20.

In the third period the Phoenix scored 19 points to the Fighting Tigers 20, and the home team's defense turned up as junior Lindsey Purvis (Fort Myers, Fl) had block against the Fighting Tigers leading scorer of the game, senior Shelby Preston. The fourth quarter began 57-39 in favor of the visitors.But Day set the tone for the last quarter hitting a three-pointer just 10 seconds in, and Henderson added six points to the score. The Phoenix ended up outscoring the Fighting Tigers in the fourth 16-14, but the score remained in favor of the visitors as the game closed out 71-55 Fighting Tigers.

Day paced the Phoenix offense with a season-high 30 points followed by Henderson with 13 points. The Fighting Tigers offense was paced by Preston, who had a double-double with 16 points and 13 rebounds, followed by Ashley Creighton with 11 points.

With the loss the Phoenix move to 2-12 overall and 0-10 in the conference. The Fighting Tigers move up to 7-6 overall 3-4 in the conference.

The Phoenix return to action at home tomorrow, Sunday, January 22 with a 12:00 p.m. tip against NEAC opponent
