Men's Volleyball Wins First Match, Loses Second in Season Opener

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. - The Wilson college men's volleyball team traveled to Bard College for a pair of non-conference contests where they started their season off with the program's first ever win.

The Phoenix (1-1, 0-0) defeated the Bard College Raptors (0-1, 0-0) in the opening match by scores of 25-18, 26-24, and 25-21. The Phoenix had a strong opening set that began with an aggressive block from freshman Nick Baxter (Denver, Pa.)—who had 14 kills and 23 assists by the end of the match—and ended with an ace from sophomore Aaron Hoke (Chambersburg, Pa.). Both Aaron Hoke and Baxter had five kills in the first set. The second set was more tightly contested, but Phoenix offense pushed beyond their opponents. Freshman Ian Firestone (York, Pa.) had 11 assists in the second set alone, and tallied 30 total assists for the match. Scoring was close in the third set as the Raptors caught up to the Phoenix to tie the score three times. But the Phoenix continued to push while staving off attacks from the Raptors to wrap-up the set for a win and put the match 3-0 over the hosts.

For the match the Phoenix posted 39 kills against 19 errors on 102 attempts for an attacking percentage of .196, while the Raptors posted 25 kills against 21 errors on 87 attempts for a .046 attacking percentage. Baxter led the Phoenix in kills with 14 followed by Aaron Hoke with 12.

Ramapo College (1-0, 0-0) took the win in the second match by scores of 25-22, 25-9, and 25-12. The first set was tightly contested, and Aaron Hoke recorded back-to-back aces. In that set, the Roadrunners had seven errors while Wilson tallied only three. The Phoenix maintained a close trail on the Roadrunners in the first set, but by the second set the Roadrunners reduced their errors, tallying only one, while the Phoenix had 10. For the match the Phoenix put up 18 kills against 19 errors on 78 attempts for an attacking percentage of -.013, while the Roadrunners posted 39 kills against 10 errors on 70 attempts for a .414 attacking percentage. Aaron Hoke and sophomore Zachary McMaster (Gettysburg, Pa.) led the Phoenix with 5 kills each, while Firestone had 16 assists.

The Phoenix return to action at Stevenson University on Friday, January 27, at 6:00 p.m. against the College of Mount Saint Joseph followed by a match against Stevenson University at 8:00 p.m.
