Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Eagles Soar Past Women's Hoops

MORRISTOWN, NJ - The Wilson College women's basketball team took on the College of Saint Elizabeth Eagles this afternoon. The hosting Eagles, who are third in the NEAC South, (9-5, 7-2 NEAC) came out on top 75-37.

The Eagles quelled the Phoenix offense with strong defensive play. Eagles Senior Danesha Triplett blocked the Phoenix's first shot of the game, an attempted lay-up from sophomore Amber Watkins (Honesdale, Pa), who was the only Phoenix to put points on the scoreboard in the first quarter. The Phoenix (2-11, 0-9 NEAC) made offensive plays but were unable to gain on the Eagles' lead. As the game progressed, the Phoenix offense gained momentum, scoring more points each quarter. Sophomore Ashley Henderson (Upper Marlboro, Md.) of the Phoenix scored the first bucket of the second quarter. Junior Amber Jones (Waldorf, Md.) scored a lay-up, and sophomore Jordyn Day (Richmond, Va) scored another of her trademark three-pointers. But the half still closed out 35-10 Eagles.

While the Eagles started the second half with a missed three-pointer, the Phoenix began with a three-point field goal from Day. The third quarter saw finessed lay-ups from Phoenix sophomore Lindsey Purvis (Fort Myers, Fl) and senior Teniera Prioleau (Baltimore, Md.). The visitors continued to trail the hosts, however, and the fourth quarter began with the Eagles up 53-21. Henderson stole the ball from Eagles freshman Dianne Nieves and took it up court for a three-pointer. Henderson had a productive quarter. She went on to score a jumper and made a fast break in the paint, adding a total of seven points to the Phoenix's score. Watkins scored the last basket of the game, a three-pointer with only two seconds left on the timer. The Phoenix scored 16 points to the Eagles 22 in the fourth, but it was not enough to restore their deficit. The game ended 75-37 Eagles.

With the loss, the Phoenix move to 2-11 overall, 0-9 in the NEAC. The Eagles move up to 9-5 overall on the season, 7-2 in the NEAC.

The Phoenix offense was paced by Day who had 10 points and 6 rebounds, followed by Henderson who had 9 points. Triplett led the Eagles offense with 18 total points, senior Jasmine Poole had a double double, 11 points and 10 rebounds.

The Phoenix return to action on their home court Saturday, January 21 at 1:00 p.m. against the SUNY Cobleskill Fighting Tigers (6-5, 2-3 NEAC).
