Women's Hoops Falls to Bryn Athyn

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - The Wilson College women's basketball team hosted Bryn Athyn for a North Eastern Athletic Conference clash tonight. The visiting Lions defeated the Phoenix 87-66.

After a pretty tight opening six minutes where the Phoenix (2-9, 0-7 NEAC) battled the Lions (8-2, 5-1 NEAC) and trailed 13-10, the visitors went on an 11-4 run to close out the opening quarter with a 24-14 lead. Sophomore Lindsey Purvis (Fort Myers, Fl, South Fort Myers) tallied 6 points in the opening quarter to lead the Phoenix offense. Working hard to get back in the game, the Phoenix used an 8-2 run to open the second quarter highlighted by 5 points from Purvis to pull within 26-22. However, the Lions would finish off the final four minutes of the half on a 14-2 run and take a 46-29 lead into the break.

The third quarter saw the Phoenix play relatively even with the Lions paced by 12 points from sophomore Jordyn Day (Richmond, Va, Varina), who knocked down a pair of three-pointers in the quarter. The Phoenix, however, were not able to cut into the Lions lead and started the fourth quarter trailing by a score of 68-49. Despite 9 more points from Purvis in the closing quarter, the Lions were able to stretch their lead and go on for the 87-66 victory.

For the game the Phoenix shot just 27% from the field including a 3-for-23 mark from behind the arc. Purvis led the Phoenix with 22 points, 7 rebounds and 3 blocks. Day added 19 points and a season high 9 rebounds. Sophomore Ashley Henderson (Upper Marlboro, Md. , North Point ) was the only other Phoenix in double digits with 10 points and 3 steals.

Wilson will be back in action on Saturday as the team travels to Penn College for a 1:00 p.m. tip.
