Phoenix Rally Past Nittany Lions

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - The Wilson College men's basketball team hosted North Eastern Athletic Conference foe Penn State Abington this evening. The Phoenix rallied from an 11 point halftime deficit to defeat the Nittany Lions 86-81.

The weather was cold outside by the action was hot inside as the Phoenix (3-7, 3-3 NEAC) used a strong defensive effort in the second half to get back in the game with the Nittany Lions (4-6, 3-2 NEAC). The teams traded baskets early with junior
Keion Adams (Gaithersburg, Md., Seneca Valley) scoring the first 5 points of the game for the Phoenix. But a 13-2 run by the Nittany Lions would follow to put the visitors up 16-7. A bucket by sophomore Ian Frazier (Palmyra, Pa., Palmyra) stopped the run and Adams followed with another jumper and the Phoenix were back within 8 points. The Nittany Lions slowly pushed their lead to 13 points with four minutes to go in the half, but an old fashioned three-point play by freshman Rashaan Bean (San Antonio, Tx, Forest Park) pulled the Phoenix within single digits with a little over a minute to go. A bucket at the buzzer for the Nittany Lions gave them a 45-34 lead at the break.

The Phoenix opened up the second half by ramping up the defensive intensity and heating up on the offensive end. A 10-2 run highlighted by back to back three pointers by Frazier quickly pulled hte Phoenix within 3 points at 47-44 with barely over three minutes gone in the half. The Nittany Lions would answer with a 10-3 run to grow the lead back to 10 points, but junior
Martez Beckett (Randallstown, Md., Chapelgate Christian) knocked down a three-pointer to pull the hosts within 57-50. Just before the midway point of the half senior Kasdan Holder (Zebulon, N.C., East Wake) got steal and found junior Marquise Beckett (Randallstown, Md. , Chapelgate Christian ) for a layup to make the score 63-58. Down 6 points with four minutes to play, the Phoenix erupted for 8 straight points to take their first lead of the second half. Another three-point play by Bean followed by a pair of free throws and a three-pointer by Adams and a bucket by senior Marquis Nelson (Hagerstown, Md. , Edison High School ) put the Phoenix up 82-80 with 1:41 to go. Adams finished off the 8-0 run with another pair of free throws. The Phoenix defense would lock down the Nittany Lions offense and only allow one free throw over the final two minutes to secure the 86-81 victory.

Adams led the way with a career high 34 points while adding 8 rebounds and a pair of blocks. Bean recorded his second double-double of the season with 22 points and 16 rebounds. Frazier added a season high 12 points in the win.

Wilson will be back on the court on Thursday at home versus Bryn Athyn at 8:00 p.m.
