Phoenix Topped by Highlanders in Women's Hoops

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa - The Wilson College women's basketball team played host to Cairn University tonight. The Phoenix were topped by the Highlanders 77-65.

The Phoenix (2-5, 0-3 NEAC) started out with a three-point basket from sophomore Ashley Henderson (Upper Marlboro, Md.) follwed by a jump shot from sophomore Lindsey Purvis (Fort Myers, Fl). The Highlanders (3-3, 1-1 Conf.) answered quickly, and after several minutes up and down the court they took the lead. After they got ahead, the Highlanders added a six point run to their total. Purvis tied up the game with two jumpers and free throw with less than two minutes left in the quarter. The Highlanders took the lead again with two free throws, and the first quarter closed out a tight 20-18 in favor of the visitors.

The Highlanders started the second quarter with a three-pointer, and continued to increase their lead. Henderson put two three-pointers on the scoreboard herself, and freshman Kristen Burdo (Norristown, Pa.) and sophomore Jordyn Day (Richmond, Va) had a bucket each. That was it for the Phoenix in the second, only adding ten-points to their total. The first half ended with a 38-29 advantage for the visting team.

Two steals from Henderson set the Phoenix up for the first two buckets of the second half. The Phoenix outshot the Highlanders 18-14 in the third quarter, and Day alone had 8 points. But it was not enough to rally the lead. The third quarter ended in favor of the Highlanders 52-47.

The Phoenix continued to make plays as each of the game's top scorers added points to the scoreboard. But the Highlanders increased their lead, this time outshooting the Phoenix 25-18. The Highlanders had a final 12 point advantage at the buzzer, and defeated the hosts 77-65.

Leading in points for the Phoenix was Henderson with 22 points, 5 assists, and 5 rebounds. She was followed by Day with 20 points, and Purvis with 13 points and 7 boards.

With the loss the Phoenix move to 2-5 on the season, while the Highlanders go to 3-3.

Wilson will be back on the court next Saturday, January 7, at home versus the College of Saint Elizabeth with a 1:00 p.m. tip.
