Phoenix Slowed by Nittany Lions

READING, Pa. - The Wilson College women's basketball team tipped-off against Penn State Berks in North Eastern Athletic Conference action. The hosting Nittany Lions of Penn State Berks barely defeated the Phoenix 80-75.

The Nittany Lions (1-4, 1-2 NEAC) began with a 9-0 run in the first quarter before a free throw from Phoenix sophomore, Lindsey Purvis (Fort Myers, Fl), broke the streak putting the first point on the scoreboard for the visiting team (2-4, 0-3 NEAC). Not long after, the Phoenix gained on the Nittany Lions' lead with a lay-up from sophomore Ashley Henderson (Upper Marlboro, Md.). The quarter closed out with a 3-point margin, 21-18 in favor of the hosting team. The Phoenix got another slow start in the second quarter, with only one field goal in the first seven minutes. But they closed the Nittany Lion's 11-point lead to a mere two points, ending the half 38-36.

The Phoenix took the lead in the third quarter, which closed out 58-54 in their favor. The two teams went tit for tat in the fourth, moving up and down the court majority of the quarter. The Phoenix maintained their lead until a three-pointer from the Nittany Lions tied the score 71-71 with less than three minutes left. As the teams battled back and forth the last two minutes, the Nittany Lions just barely won the game. They stole the lead in the last thirty seconds of play to end with a 80-75 victory for the hosts.

The Phoenix offense was paced by sophomore Jordyn Day (Richmond, Va) who had a season-high 25 points, and Purvis who also scored a personal season-high 23 points. Henderson led the team with three steals.

With the loss the Phoenix fall to 2-4 overall and 0-3 in the NEAC, while Penn State Berks improves to 1-4 overall and 1-2 in conference play.
