Men's Hoops Falls Short at Berks

READING, Pa. - The Wilson College men's basketball team faced off against North Eastern Athletic Conference foe Penn State Berks this afternoon and were defeated by a final score of 82-79.

After a hard fought victory yesterday afternoon, the Phoenix (1-5, 1-2 NEAC) found themselves in another tight contest today versus the Nittany Lions (2-4, 2-1 NEAC). The opening five minutes saw a lot of back and forth as the teams were even at 9-9, but the Phoenix would go on a 10-2 run, highlighted by 6 points from sophomore
Dominique Walker (Smyrna, DE, St. Thomas More Academy), to take a 19-11 lead with just over 11 minutes to go before the half. The Nittany Lions would fight back and tie the game at 28-28 and eventually reclaim the lead at 31-28 near the 5 minute mark. The Phoenix would climb back in front on a three-point basket by junior Keion Adams (Gaithersburg, Md., Seneca Valley) and a layup by senior Marquis Nelson (Hagerstown, Md. , Edison High School ). After being tied at 31 a piece, the Phoenix again would go on a run, this time 6-0, with buckets by freshman Rashaan Bean (San Antonio, Tx, Forest Park), a three-point play by sophomore Ian Frazier (Palmyra, Pa., Palmyra), and a three-pointer by Adams to take a 41-35 lead. As time ran out in the first half, Adams gathered a rebound and knocked down a jumper as time expired to send the Phoenix into the half with a 43-39 lead.

The Nittany Lions used a 9-2 run to open the second half and take a 48-45 lead less than 2 minutes into the half. Much like yesterday's game, neither team pulled away, however the Nittany Lions were able to push the lead to 7 points with 1:10 remaining. A furious rally by the Phoenix that featured 5 straight points from Bean and a three-pointer from Nelson, pulled the team within 1 point with 5 seconds to go. After a pair of made free-throws by the Nittany Lions, the Phoenix had one last opportunity but a desperation shot as time expired was no good.

Offensively, the Phoenix were led by a career high 27 points from Bean, while Adams added a double-double of 17 points and 14 rebounds.

Wilson will return to action at home on Wednesday, December 7 at 8:00 p.m. versus Hood College.
