Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Phoenix Tame Chargers

LANCASTER, Pa. - The Wilson College men's basketball team hit the road for North Eastern Athletic Conference play at Lancaster Bible College this afternoon. The Phoenix collected their first win of the season with a 74-71 victory over the Chargers.

With the win, the Phoenix (1-4, 1-1 NEAC) handed the Chargers (1-4, 1-2 NEAC) a rare home loss. This was only the second home loss in nearly two years for the Chargers and only the second loss in NEAC play in their last 28 conference games. The game was tight the entire 40 minutes as neither team had a lead larger than seven points. The hosts Chargers grabbed an early lead as they opened the game on a 7-2 run, but the Phoenix answered with a pair of buckets by junior Keion Adams (Gaithersburg, Md., Seneca Valley) and freshman Jordan Grapes (Romney, Wv, Hampshire). With just under 14 minutes left in the opening half, the Chargers held their largest lead at seven points, but sophomore Ian Frazier (Palmyra, Pa., Palmyra) nailed a three-pointer to bring the Phoenix back within four points at 13-9. The Phoenix were able to draw even for the first time since the opening baskets when freshman Rashaan Bean (San Antonio, Tx, Forest Park) hit a three-pointer to knot the game at 19-19 at the 7:52 mark. The two teams would exchange leads three times and be tied five times before heading to the break with the Chargers holding a 35-34 advantage.

During the opening minutes of the second half, the Chargers pushed their lead to six points, but the Phoenix continued to chip away at the lead. A 9-1 run by the Phoenix, highlighted by three straight three-point buckets by junior
Marquise Beckett (Randallstown, Md. , Chapelgate Christian ), Adams, and Frazier, gave the visitors a 49-46 lead with a little over 13 minutes left in regulation. A few minutes later, after a pair of Charger free-throws pulled the hosts within two points, sophomore Dominique Walker (Smyrna, DE, St. Thomas More Academy) hit a layup, then stole the ball and finished with another layup to put the Phoenix back up by six points at 56-50. The two teams continued to battle and the Chargers pulled within one point at 65-64 with just over three minutes left in the game, but back-to-back buckets by senior Marquis Nelson (Hagerstown, Md. , Edison High School ) and Bean pushed the Phoenix lead to five point with less than two minutes to go. The Chargers would pull within one point again with 21 seconds remaining, but Bean would step to the line and knock down a pair of free-throws to put the Phoenix up 74-71 with 15 seconds to go. The Phoenix would play solid defense on the last possession and force the Chargers into a tough contested three-point shot that would miss as time was about to expire as the visitors would hold on for the road win.

For the game, the Phoenix shot 44% from the floor while knocking down a season high 86% of their free-throws including going 5-5 in the final minutes to seal the victory. Adams led the way with 22 points while Bean added a career high 16 points. Nelson added 11 points while going 7-7 at the charity stripe.

Wilson will be back in action tomorrow at 2:00 p.m. at Penn State Berks.
