Women's Basketball Falls to Penn State Abington

ABINGTON, Pa. - The Wilson College women's basketball team traveled to Penn State Abington for a North Eastern Athletic Conference game where they were defeated by the hosting Nittany Lions 95-81.

The Nittany Lions (3-1, 1-0 NEAC) established a lead in the first quarter, but it did not remain unanswered by the Phoenix (2-2, 0-1 NEAC) offense. Sophomore Ashley Henderson (Upper Marlboro, Md.) closed in on the Lions when she scored a beautiful three-pointer. Freshman Kristen Burdo (Norristown, Pa., Perkiomen School) followed soon after with a lay-up, putting the score at 5-7. The Phoenix offense was aggressive, running past their opponents to put points on the scoreboard, and the first quarter ended 17-14 with the Phoenix only three points behind. The second quarter saw intense competition as the two teams battled it out on the court. Sophomore Jordyn Day (Richmond, Va) had seven points in the second quarter. The Phoenix put in good work, and sophomore Amber Watkins (Honesdale, Pa) gave the Phoenix the last bucket only nine seconds before the buzzer to end the first half 37-37.

The Phoenix took the lead twice in the third quarter. They got points from sophomore Lindsey Purvis (Fort Myers, Fl),who led the team in the third quarter with seven points. But the quarter closed out 69-60 in favor of the Nittany Lions, despite the Phoenix's aggressive play in the paint. Despite impressive play from junior Amber Jones (Waldorf, Md.), Day, and Purvis, the Phoenix couldn't catch the Nittany Lions, and the game ended 95-81 in favor of the hosts. The Phoenix continue to show depth as the bench contributed 31 points in the game.

The Phoenix offense was paced by Purvis who had a season high 23 total points, and Burdo who added a career high 22 points.

With the loss, the Phoenix move to 2-2, 0-1 in the NEAC  and the Nittany Lions improve to 3-1, 1-0 NEAC.

Wilson will be back in action on Saturday, December 3 at 1:00 p.m. at Lancaster Bible College.
