Women's Basketball Soars Above Falcons

ALLENTOWN, Pa. - The Wilson College women's basketball team traveled to Cedar Crest College for a non-conference game where they defeated the hosting Falcons 79-71.

Although the Falcons (2-1) started out with the lead, scoring six points by the time the Phoenix (2-1) made one bucket, the Phoenix closed out the first quarter with a five point lead above their opponents. The Phoenix started ahead in the second quarter, and they had some good action in the paint with lay-ups coming from Amber Watkins (Honesdale, Pa) and Lindsey Purvis (Fort Myers, Fl). But the team only added eight points to their total in the second, giving the Falcons the advantage at 33-27. The Phoenix lost their edge in the second quarter, but they regained momentum in the third.

Where the Falcons outscored the Phoenix 20-8 in the second, the Phoenix outscored the Falcons 28-13 in the third—sophmore Ashley Henderson (Upper Marlboro, Md.) scored 10 points for the Phoenix in the third quarter alone. The Phoenix offense was dynamic in the third quarter, recording jumpers outside the paint, lay-ups from in the paint, and three-point goals. Playing hard ball gave the Phoenix a 54-46 advantage going into the fourth. The Phoenix maintained speed and quickness throughout the last quarter to ensure their grip on the lead, and the game ended 79-71 in favor of the visiting Phoenix.

The Phoenix offense was paced by Henderson who had a season record of 20 total points, Day who had 19 points, and Purvis who had 17 points.

With the victory, the Phoenix move to 2-1 on the season and the Falcons go to 2-1.

Wilson will be back in action on Wednesday, November 30 at 6:00 p.m. at Penn State Abington.
