Men's Basketball Clawed by Cougars

WINCHESTER, Va. - The Wilson College men's basketball team traveled to Shenandoah University for a non-conference tournament where the Averett University Cougars defeated them 82-69.

The Cougars (1-2) were first to score and it took the Phoenix (0-3) almost five minutes to put the ball through the hoop. Junior Keion Adams (Gaithersburg, Md.) broke the ice for the Phoenix with a lay-up that gave him the first of his 30 total points this game. The Cougars started to pull ahead with a seven point lead, but Adams tied the score 35-35 with a 3-pointer with two and half minutes until the end of the first half. As the Phoenix continued to push against the Cougars, Marquis Nelson (Hagerstown, Md.), Ian Frazier (Palmyra, Pa.), and Dominique Walker (Smyrna, DE) all added to the score, giving the Phoenix a four point lead, closing the half out 43-39 over their opponents.

The Phoenix maintained intensity throughout the second half, but several fouls gave the Cougars easy free throw points to add to their score. Despite the Phoenix's aggression on the ball and their continued scoring, the Cougars were able to make things happen for their team in the paint. Frazier was last to score for the Phoenix with a fast break into the paint for a lay-up. The second half closed out 87-69 in favor of the Cougars.

For the game, the Phoenix shot 25 of 60 from the field for a 41.7% shooting percentage, and were just 7 of 20 from behind the arc for 35%. Adams and Nelson led the way offensively with 30 and 10 points respectively. Adams also led the team with a double double, 11 rebounds and 30 points.

Wilson will return to action on Friday, November 30 at Penn State Abington.
